Porsche - best for durability.

Read in a magazine recently that it's a little known fact that over two-thirds of all Porsches ever built are still on the road today! Thus making them more environmentally friendly than all other more 'disposable' cars.

If this is true, and the source seems reliable, it would surely be a useful marketing tool for the company.

Yes, Porsche claims this in marketing brochures and similar publications. The number seems to be astonishing considering Porsche's long history, but you have to take into account two effects:
The older cars built in the 60s and 70s have been produced in relativ small numbers (compared to today's product portfolio including Boxsters and Cayennes) and lot of them became collectors' items of P-enthusiasts spending lot of money to keep the oldies in good condition (it's not like disposing a 15 year old VW Golf).

The big boost in production numbers came during the last 10 years only (996, 986, Cayenne)- so these cars should be still doing o.k. even without extraordinary care/investment as they are still relatively new.

But even though the 2/3 number is impressive. I guess it's fair to assume that most of the remaining 1/3 did not "die in bed from senility", but lost their lives in the battlefield (crashed).

I am not sure Porsche would want to boast about this number. Since most Porsche's look alike, it just that many more to be seen on the road.

BTW, about 7-8 years ago Porsche was claiming 80% of Porsche's built were still on the road. So the 2/3 number may not be as good like people to think.

Ah, yes. We much prefer the F.E.R.R.A.R.I. (Flashy Eccentric Really Ragged Automobile Rusting in Italy), which falls apart and has glue coming out of vents on a $200.000 car

- and people still want them. Talk about sheep
