Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

US dealers don't have allocations to order yet, but they have information on their launch car(s). My dealer had specified a Tip on the launch car but it was bumped by PCNA due to lack of availability.

I know Tips are allocated and tough to come by on a normal basis, but I can't help but wonder: is Porsche really just short on Tips, or does this indicate an issue with the Tip handling the power of the TT? Do any of you folks in Europe lucky enough to already have a car on order have a confirmed Tip order? Am I just a conspiracy theorist?

I may be wrong but I heard that ALL launch cars will be manual ONLY, no Tiptronic. At least this is the case in Germany, no Tiptronic launch cars.

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

Tips seem always harder to order in US....per my dealer, only 15-20% of 996TTS in US were Tips....

US 997TT launch cars seem to be manuals w/steel brakes, despite P publicizing that Tip is faster (and is more profitable for P)....and despite PCCB being more profitable for P....sounds like a component shortage to me.....

I am glad intheloop reconfirmed this. Many people have said they have ordered cars. As far as i know no one in hte US has "ordered" a car. The only thing that was "order-able" was the dealer launch car. There are NO US allocations and no cars to order. I like many people have a deposit down and I told them what I would like on the car but no one in the US can get a order with an allocation and an order number. Is there anyone in the US who "believes" they have an allocation?

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

By the way, we are driving a PORSCHE, why are we even bothering with tiptronic turbo? All turbo should be manual

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

Same here. Was promised a launch car and now it seems I will have to wait till September. Will place the order and spec it.

All middle east launch cars are going to the emirates. No info on gearbox. I believe they will be a mix of tips and manuals.

    Indeed

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

I'm getting my dealer launch car - no changes permitted, and it's a manaul with short shifter, sportchrono and iron brakes

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

    Im geting the tip

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

I do have confirmation for Tip but no PCCB

That's exactly why I brought this up. One would think that with all the press about the Tip being faster, with most all the spy pics out before the official announcement showing a Tip, that US launch cars would be Tips too. So it got me wondering if there was an issue with the transmission...

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

This will prove that the buyer of a Turbo is changing : the following is predicted the first 6 -9 months : 6 speeds will languish at resale , but the " rare " automatic gear box version ( granny can drive it JUST fine to church ) will resell/flip for 20 + K over MSRP and is I'm sure currently the only one the early speculators want esp. with the Tips being hard to come by , lol .Kinda embarassing from the standpoint of how Turbo owners have always trashed people who got slushbox only SL,S and E class AMGs and such.
What no one knows is what the " real world " 60-150 mph " rolling acceleration between the two is like , where the 6 speeds gearing may be an advantage . Who launches a manual car by smoking the tires on the street ? If you did that 10 times, you'd get 10 different numbers to 60 or 100 mph and a glazed and trashed clutch. . There may even be a slight advantage to the manual at speed. We'll know when real tests are released , not all these fluff articles that their PR peolple have allowed the journalists to publish so far.

I predict if a couple reputable mags show the 6 speed 0.05 seconds faster 60-150 mph, suddenly everyone wants the manual , even someone who already has a Tip 997 Turbo in the garage .

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

over here , launch cars are all tiptronic.

Agree that 60-150MPH accel is most relevant straight-line performance stat in US (OK, maybe 60-120MPH in US) and even in Germany...but how is this measured "real world"??? What gear is car most often "realistically" in before deciding to pursue a "gap" in the fwy "jigsaw puzzle"? How quickly/reliably can a typical/even a 95%ile rennteamer downshift his own 997TT (not a cheap, disposable 997TT press pool car )vs the rennteamer simply flooring the accel on an SC-equipped Tip? ...I'd bet on the rennteamer in the Tip being faster in any 60-150MPH spurt/N-ring comparo....

As for the marketing impact of Tip vs manual times posted in car mags, I suspect 90% of 997TT buyers in US are about as clueless about cars' performance metrics as 95% of SL55 buyers are .....let's admit it: 90-95% of the buyer base of new 997TT/SL55's choose car based on such criteria as: what they can afford...and which car has bigger discounts/better lease terms; which car is earlier in its product cycle (w/fewer older copies seen around town); which car has prettier styling; ability to fit 2 golf bags in trunk for the wkend drive to country club; availability of a convertible version; and what the wife signs off on....

That I'm sure happens much more with a Turbo intender than a GT3/GT3RS intender. Again, an obvious sign that today's Turbo has a much different PAG sales mission than it had 20 years ago even if there is a 997 GT2 , which I'm not sure would sell any better even if it were priced this time around at a market correct MSRP of $145K instead of $195K.

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

I'm not sure if I understood the question. Anyway, I have a launch car coming that I ordered to my specs through my dealer. The car is in their system with a build date in April. It has a delivered price too.
As far as allocations after that; my dealer has none.

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

There's at least one Turbo tip confirmed for May-June in Switzerland.

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

My dealer told me that only nine (9) of the 25 launch cars in USA would be Tips. Mine is an manual with PCCB and LSD. Confirmed. Do you think I should have ordered a Sport chrono too? (Pls, a joke) Delivery is July 8th.

Doubt entire US mkt only has 25 launch cars.....would think each dealer in major (and many non-major) urban regions gets 1 launch car, so prob ?200 launch cars.....

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

Easily 200 launch cars. Every dealer will get a launch Turbo, and the bigger stores will get more than one. Although I urge you to have your dealer give you a printout from EDCS if they are confirming delivery dates with you, because as of today Turbos are not yet appearing in dealer allocations. Without a printout from EDCS, "your" car is real as the tooth fairy.

P can only sell perhaps 200-300/yr of GT3/RS/2 into US mkt (even the incredibly cheap and brilliant GT3 is not an easy sell for P in its lim vols)...not the vols that P needs for profitable survival...

Upside is P/F will always need to have a few hard-core, lim produc models in their line-up, to provide the "racecar driver halo" for the 997TT/430Spiders that generate a major %age of P/F profits....and 997TT/430 are now comfortable/easy-to-drive/reliable enough for the non-car-oriented guys who comprise 90% of the new F/P buyer base....and who prob buy these cars to advertise their success/appear more youthful during their wkend jaunt to the country club......

Yep, and it's probably going to St. Gallen to a guy who's got close connections to the Swiss importer. Met him end of last year and he already knew that he would get the car in May/June.

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

Confirmed for May Prod with com nr. (Tip+PCCB).

Maybe not...sounds odd to me that the guy knew last year that he is getting a car in May/June with Tiptronic...unless his is a close friend of Dr. Wiedeking.
German dealers get 209 launch cars as far as I heard and only launch cars are available before the factory holiday shutdown. Dealers are free to spec out these cars for customers but little dealers get only one launch car and larger dealers get two cars. And all of them (with one exception) are manual gearbox cars.

I have to correct myself. The guy didn't mention the gearbox he's expecting/hoping for nor did I ask (cause at the time I spoke with him, it hadn't become such a touchy subject yet here on Rennteam). All he told me was that we would be getting a TT in May/June 06 directly from the Swiss importer.

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

    "Touchy" subject?

It would be interesting to learn how Porsche has chosen the gearbox type on launch cars based on the country they're delivered to??? It is also interesting to learn if there are countries where both transmission types will be available?!

I don't know how many launch cars will be available worldwide but I have the feeling that there won't be as many as there were back in 2000 when the 996 Turbo was launched. We also heard that practically the whole production til the end of the year is sold out in most countries but we have no clue if this has to do with limited availability or high demand. Maybe a combination of both?!

My view: sold out due to very restricted supply only. I do not see many buyers lining up to buy the car as introduced in Geneva. My dealer (a rather large one) does not complain about too many orders eather...

Maybe I am not the only one who is disappointed with the 997TT

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

Allocations of Tiptronic and Manual cars was set a long time ago, based on what the dealer "ordered".

Ex. Dealer has allocation for 2006:

This is what he ordered when the allocation was set.

    10 Manual
    3 Tiptronic

Here's the problem, now he wants 10 Tiptronic and 3 manual.

Poor insight by PAG or Importer?
If the Importers had been aware of the improvements in the Tiptronic they might have planned "ordered" different.

Luckily, I told my dealer a year ago that I wanted Tiptronic

Re: Do you have a confirmed order with the Tip?

Christian, when I left Germany a few days ago, dealers still had no allocations for ANY cars besides the launch car as far as I heard.
So I'm not sure how it works in Sweden or the US but in Germany the allocations come pretty late.

And I'm pretty curious to see how many people actually get Tiptronic on their launch car because there was a rumor a while ago that ALL launch cars, no matter what the dealer ordered, will have manual. I'm curious to see if this rumor is true, I hope not.
