    Lake Garda (Italy) + Porsches...

Just got back from hols in Lake Garda and surrounding areas. The place must be quite affluent - saw 9 p-cars on the first day we arrived.

Admittedly some had German #plates and some had Swiss plates. Nice to look at nonetheless....

    (That was actually Verona)

We decided to go last minute so got a good deal (from lastminute.com) at Parc Hotel Resort in Peschiera. The hotel was ok but the golf course was GREAT

There are so many nice spots around the lake (it's huge) so I'm sure anyone who wants to visit can have a great time regardless of which hotel they stay in!

Re: Lake Garda (Italy) + Porsches...

Am there once a month, the place really shines on weekdays, else its way too overcrowded

Lucky you! It is very crowded with tourists like us in some places but there are always some hidden parts that are the locals' favourites.

I'd love to be in the position to be there once a month!

isnt that the house, where the last scene from "casino royal" was shot?

one of the most beautiful houses if have ever seen in my life, wonder how much it costs...

Re: Lake Garda (Italy) + Porsches...

Wonderful photos! I'm really looking forward to visiting Lago di Garda later this August! Thanks again!

Re: Lake Garda (Italy) + Porsches...

Hope you'll have a fantastic time there!
It's gonna be v hot tho!
    Are you driving there?

Re: Lake Garda (Italy) + Porsches...

    really nice pics.

I'll be there in less than 2 weeks myself.
I will rent a car and drive around. I was just wondering how the roads are over there (driving around, parking, etc.)

What about speeding? Police is everywhere or not? How are they with tourists? Radars?

    Thanks.

Re: Lake Garda (Italy) + Porsches...

Hm... we didn't drive ourselves though I have the following observations:

    1) We saw a few traffic wardens issuing tickets for parking violations.

    2) The bigger towns around the lake like Malcesine, Sirmione, Peschiera are car-friendly enough but not in the old town centres where streets tend to be narrow / packed with tourists and oftentimes single-flow.

    3) I hope I am not being overly judgemental here but I could say most Italian drivers on the road are quite "passionate" (which makes it fun I guess!)

    4) The roads I've been on are of great quality (relatively smooth surface, winding and scenic!)

    5) Pedestrians do not have priorities on zebra-crossing (pelican or whatever you call them). But I suppose that's the same in most places in Europe outside of the UK?

Hope you have a fab time there too. Looks like there could be a rennteam-meet there!

No, actually Casino Royale was shot at an estate on Lake Como. I'll try and post a picture I took of it last year when the film was in post production.

Yes, some scenes of Casino Royale were shot at the Lago di Como. Villa la Gaeta (you can book holiday rooms there) and Villa del Balbianello.
Here is a picture of Villa la Gaeta.

... and here is one of Villa del Balbianello.

    Yes,--that's my place!

I just came back from Italy and want to add my observations for the Lake Como to your points 3-5:

    3) exactly my observations, too. E.g., through the towns from Chiavenna to the Lake Como there is a speed limit of 50km/h like in Germany. Most drivers don't care and drive 70-80km/h. Some insane drivers are going estimated 100km/h and more. The same insane drivers overtake in no passing zones, overtake despite oncoming traffic, overtake before corners that cannot be surveyed, ...
I'm at the Lake Como once or twice a year since many years and despite seeing many police cars I never saw a speed trap.

    4) The roads in the northern part of the Lake Como are of bad quality, rough surface, many potholes. If you are leaving the main roads around the lake and drive into the mountains the streets are getting worse.

    5) I don't know the legal situation in Italy, but I assume that pedestrians have priority at zebra-crossings like in Germany. But nobody cares around the lake. In fact pedestrians are surprised if you stop for them

Thanks for the clarification - looks fantastic.

Would you say Lake Garda and Lake Como are quite similar?

Just wondering whether it is worth going to the Lakes again on hols in the near future.....

Thanks guys for all the info on roads around lake como and garda.

I was thinking about renting an alfa 159 but it might be wiser and easier to drive around if I rent something smaller to go through traffic and narrow roads + parking.

I'll be travelling south to florence after some days spent around como, and that's why I want a "big" car. Maybe I should settle for a golf or something.

    Any advice?

Re: Lake Garda (Italy) + Porsches...

A few remarks hinted from the previous posts.

    1) Of course streets are narrow....but only if compared with US avenues Trust me, they are not that narrow.
So go for a 159, definitely

    2) Police controls (read radars) DO exist...unfortunately

    3) Zebra-crossing: it's true that pedestrian have way like everywhere in the world, but it is also true that only very few people care and they get astonished if cars stop to let them cross

    4) Como and Garda lakes both deserve a visit, being Garda more "touristic" and Como more quiet (remember that George Clooney has a villa there)

    Ciao
