Importing US 991 to the Netherlands?

Hi Guys, as I will be returning from the US to the Netherlands soon I am thinking of bringing a nearly new 991-1 or 991-2 back with me. My concern is what are the major differences between the US and Netherlands versions and what if anything needs to be done to get the car passed the import checks and registered.

The specific model I looking at is the base Carrera 2/4 or 2/4S with a manual gearbox, maybe convertible, if anyone has already done this perhaps they could help me.

The following issues are ones that I have thought of but their may be others:

- Exterior lighting, head lights, rear lights, brake lights, indicators, reversing lights, and fog lights

- rear bumper and number plate size

- engine technical differences, emission controls etc.

- speedometer analog and digital in MPH not KPH

- navigation sysytem

- warranty continuation

- security alarm and insurance cover

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there - I wouldn't bother personally.. You'll end up with a car which you can tell is a US import (all the things you mention plus bing-bong warnings, disclaimers, etc). They will always sell at a big discount compared to a local one. Plus the hassle and expense of getting all the mods done. If it was a US car like a Hellcat or something then there might be more of a case.

I agree. I would get a used 991 in Germany (there are tons of cars available) and forget about the import (to NL) hassle.

Thanks for the feedback guys and I understand your point of view regarding getting a local car in Europe, however in my case the cost advantage of buying in the US is quite considerable.

There are a lot of one year / eighteen month old 991 Carrera Cabriolets with low mileage available for around the $100,000 mark which is considerably less than the price in Holland which is closer to $175,000. In addition if I buy the car six months before I return I will have no import duties to pay. Also my shipping costs are covered by the company I work for. If I buy the car in Germany where I know they are cheaper, I then as a resident of the Netherlands will be faced with import duties when I bring it into Holland.

I intend to keep the car for many years (at least five or more) and use it as a second car so a lower resale price is not of prime concern as compared to the $75,000 saving on the purchase price.

If anyone has been down a similar path I would be very grateful to know the detail regarding my points in my initial post?

Don't know about Holland, but it should be similar to Switzerland .

There are no more adaptations to make to US specs recent 911 when imported to Switzerland .

Only downside to me is when you will resell the car . It will be clearly indicated that it is a US import . You probably will have to sell it 20% beneath market price .

Import duties in the EU? Am I missing something?

In the Netherlands you have to pay a tax called BPM when any car is first registered in the country regardless of where it has come from. This is not required if you have owned the car for a minimum of six months as a resident of another country as it is then considered as personal property when you return the the Netherlands.

According to the chart below BPM on a 991 with 194g. CO2 is:

((194 - 168) * 475)) + 13465 = 25,815.-

A $100,000 (84,000 Euro) Carrera Carbriolet in the US is around 12 to 18 months old, for the same overall cost in Europe I would get a 48 month old car. As I intend to keep the car for a minimum of five years I think getting the younger car is a better choice. I just need to know what needs to be done to the car when I bring it to the Netherlands.

I imported a Boxster from EU to Switzerland a few years ago, but that was straightforward as the car had EU type approval (wheras a US car does not). It doesn't help with your questions much other than I clarified at the time that Porsche's warranty was worldwide, so should be honoured everywhere. I had warranty work done on it in Switz, although sometimes dealers didn't seem happy about it (not sure why, as presumably they charge it back the same as they would for a local car).

Yup, not too many non Dutch people realise how expensive it is to own a high CO2 car in the Netherlands!

However I have seen plenty of USA sourced 911's driving around in Holland, so I know it is possible to import them in fact I believe some people do it as a job, I'm just trying to find out what needs to be done, so I don't have any shock suprises!

I can't be the only one who wants to do this and it would be great if I could find someone who could pass on their experiences to help the rest of us poor over taxed Porsche lovers in Holland :-)!

If I do find out I will post a "How To" on this site :-)!

Do you speak dutch ? If yes, just call the local authorities in charge of registering the cars
