    High-Speed Driving

    Yesterday I was in Germany testing some high-speed driving on the Autobahn. There have been some side winds and the left lane was a little bit bumpy. But I was quite surprised that the car was flattering and unsteady starting from about 220 km/h in PASM normal and sport mode. I was not driving faster than 250 km/h because I'm still breaking in the car. With a 996 the drive was much quieter because of the 4 wheel drive I suppose. Am I not supposed to drive so fast on bumpy roads or shouldn't I be worried? I'm not so used to high-speed driving in Switzerland and I'm wondering how risky that is.

    at high speeds with side wind the 911 is/or feels flattering because it's that light at the front.

    Right with a carrera 4 it's a bit different because there is more weight at the front. When i'm driving over approx 180kmh at windy conditions on bumpy roads it feels with my gt3 like...
    But i guess that's the whole point of driving a 911 for a lot of people

    Hmmm, I haven't had this problem (yet?) because I have had PASM off during high speed runs down an "unnamed" road in southern Maryland (should any law enforcement authorities be reading this note). I've only been using PASM on smooth roads with twists & turns, not for flat out running. Which part of the Autobahn were you on?

    I experienced this flattering with both, PASM sport and normal. I suppose with 'off' you mean normal mode. The Autobahn is the one from Schaffhausen to Singen.

    I hear you man! I experienced the same thing on the freeway here in Sweden, but even without the side winds. The front end, but also the whole ride, started getting nervous and unsteady from about, as you said, 220 km/h. I took it up to 265 km/h, at that speed things were, well, let's say interesting. That particular part of freeway is quite poor, but I'm not sure it's much of a defense for the Porsche. I drove the new Corvette on the exact same piece of freeway just a couple of weeks ago. I took the Corvette up to 275 km/h and it felt much more confident than the Porsche. In fact, the faster I drove it the steadier and less dramatic it got.
    Also, I must add that the acceleration in the Vette is way quicker above 200 km/h than in the 997 CS.

    No, a coupe. Why, do you think there's a big difference in high speed stability between a coupe and convertible?
