Nissan GT-R 7:35 on the Nurburgring

    If this is true....

The GT-R sets it's sights on the Porsche Carrera GT

The Nissan GT-R development team has made another run at the Nürburgring record books this morning--and the Porsche 911 Turbo is no longer its target. Sources intimately familiar with Nissan's latest test sessions inform us that the group is now gunning to beat the Porsche Carrera GT--a remarkably lofty goal considering that that Walter Röhrl reportedly piloted a Carrera GT around the 'Ring in 7 minutes 28 seconds. Another Carrera GT, driven by Horst von Saurma, managed a lap time of 7:32.

Our sources tell us that, thus far, the Nissan has fallen short of the Carrera GT's record-time, but not by much. Our mole tells us that some wet sections of the track slowed them down, and that with optimum track conditions, some heroic driving could still reel in the Porsche Supercar. Nissan reps would not divulge any specific lap times, but they hinted that something under 7:35 may have been achieved. Regardless, it's clear that Nissan's goal of overtaking the 911 Turbo has been achieved in a big way.

Stopwatch drama aside, Nissan also gave us some new eye-candy by removing most of the camouflage that has been a staple of GT-R sightings for more than a year now. Although not in showroom shape, the latest GT-R test cars give us our clearest look yet at the prototype's front bumper and headlights, and the GT-R badge is now prominently displayed in the grille-opening, and on the trunk lid. We also managed a pretty revealing interior shot as one GT-R prepared to launch. The rear vinyl camouflage has also been removed, and now only flat-black paint remains to obscure the GT-R's true styling. This is as close as we're likely to get to an undisguised car until the car's Tokyo Show debut.

In their most recent 'Ring runs, Nissan rented the track early Monday morning, and had three GT-R prototypes--spaced one-minute apart--all taking their best shots. One of the GT-Rs was reportedly driven by Horst von Saurma--the same 'Ring specialist that drove the Carrera GT to a 7:32 lap time. Another driver was said to be a Japanese driver named Shimizu--possibly well-known racer Kazuo Shimizu. The third GT-R pilot went un-named.

Nissan will likely continue their assault on the Nürburgring--and on the Porsche legacy--for the rest of this week. If the GT-R manages to do the seemingly impossible and unseat the Carrera GT, we'll let you know.

    Un-covered interior:

Re: Nissan GT-R 7:35 on the Nurburgring

    Ugly one indeed...

Re: Nissan GT-R 7:35 on the Nurburgring

    But fast, apparently
I would call the styling "distinctive"
It looks, if nothing else, original.

Re: Nissan GT-R 7:35 on the Nurburgring

    Tim,
This is pure marketing BS IMHO. Remember Audi's official claim for R8(7.55min)? von Saurma achived only 8.04min...

Re: Nissan GT-R 7:35 on the Nurburgring

I am not surprise if that GTR is modified specifically for the nurburgring time trail. I don't believe stock car can acheive similar lap time. They have to take into account that engine and drivetrain's lifespan is longer than the warranty period given by the manufactuer.

Re: Nissan GT-R 7:35 on the Nurburgring

I thought the R32 GTR (a car from some 15 years ago!) lapped the ring at 7:50+, and since then the R34 has lapped it in the 7:40s? So why is it so surprising that this one does 7:35 or below?

With 1700+ kg and 480 bhp? Fat chance.

Re: Nissan GT-R 7:35 on the Nurburgring

evo reported that the R32 running under 8mn was probably slightly tuned (420hp+) and featured semi-slicks. And it was driven by nurburgring professional driver.

so it's very likely Nissan is aiming at the CGT record with a modified GT-R which proves it must be a pretty efficient package straight out the box; much less prone to bite than Porsche's flagship.

Re: Nissan GT-R 7:35 on the Nurburgring

Any time a manufacturer is out to set a record for the ring, you can bet the stock conservative timing, shock valving, and street allignment are going to be WAY different than a showroom vehicle. Especially with a turbo, it's not that hard to add another 70hp with some better fuel, timing and additional boost! Also, do they use stock brake pads? The pads alone make a huge difference.

Unfortunately, these are things we can never prove, but rest assured, they are happening. It's like sports stars and steriods. You know they are taking them, and they make a difference, but most turn and look the other way

I have a funny feeling this 1700kg figure will be beaten by a fair margin.

Latest "apparently" official figuresare claiming 1590KG. Thats more like it!

480bhp hasnt been "officially" confirmed yet. Maybe they'll surprise us all! Maybe they wont!

    ...Mad

P.S.If you look at all the ring pictures, the car at the mentioned isnt wearing standard road tyres. As can be clearly seen in a stationary shot.

Re: Nissan GT-R 7:35 on the Nurburgring

All marketing BS just to get a buzz going about the car. I won't believe the time till another magazine tests it.
No stock Skyline in the past has lapped quicker than 7:55. That was a modified car also. The limiter was taken off and a slight computer tune was done on the car.
Watch the "Best Motoring" videos. The NSX-R and the GT-Rs are usually quicker than all other cars, including Ferrari's and Porsche's. The only problem is, they're only quicker in Japan on those videos, not in Europe.

Re: Nissan GT-R 7:35 on the Nurburgring

...in fairness, this is a different skyline than before; it has what, 150 or so more HP? thats a lot...

Re: Nissan GT-R 7:35 on the Nurburgring

Results on Best MOTORing have to be taken with a grain of salt. The cars are placed on a grid in reverse order and many results are heavily affected by this. The fastest car being held up and provide a fighting chance for the medium paced cars.

For example the test done with the Challenge Stradale and GT3 at Twin Motegi was won by the NSX-R with the CS and GT3 taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. If the 360 CS and GT3 were not held up behind the Lamborghini Gallardo both cars could have taken top honors as the fastest laps for both cars were one second faster than the NSX-R. If Best MOTORing did not use the reverse order, it is unlikely the NSX-R would not be able to keep in touch had the CS and GT3 started in front of the cars rather than behind the field.

Re: Nissan GT-R 7:35 on the Nurburgring
