    Tyre replacement with TPMS

Guys, I've seen lots of threads of what tyres to get when replacement is due, and lots of handy suggestions where to buy them. But what about fitting the new tyres when you have to refit the Porsche 'Tyre Pressure Monitors'?

When I asked my OPC this they unsurprisingly said to always have tyres replaced there. Of course this is where they throw on a huge price margin! Ideally I want to shop around but I don't know how comfortable I would be having a non-OPC fit them.

Perhaps I can buy the tyres myself and then take them to Porsche to have them fitted?! Hmmmm...

Your thoughts gentlemen if you please.

    Re: Tyre replacement with TPMS

Hummmm, the TPMS will recalibrate itself, and you can do stuff yourself to fiddle with it if it's not immediately working.

The only problem I see is the battery condition of the batteries in the wheel-mounted transmitters. At what point should the units be replaced? (There's no way to change batteries, the entire unit needs to be replaced )

IOW, unless you get Porsche service to advise you and possibly have to get new units with new batteries you might have to remove the perfectly good tires in a few thousand miles.

I'd just bite the bullet and have Porsche do the whole thing. Then you can more effectively nail them to the wall (i.e. get replacement wheel) if any of your wheels are scratched.

    Re: Tyre replacement with TPMS

I may be mistaken, but I think I read in the Porsche literature or heard from someone on this site that for cars equipped with TPMS, you need to have the stems, which are made to work with TPMS, replaced at the same time. I don't know what they charge for this.

But your right about having a Porsche dealer do it. If they mess up the wheel balancing or anything else on a tire replacement, they are on the hook for making it right.

All the information you want to know about TPMS is located HERE

Beru is the OEM for the TPMS that Porsche uses.

    Re: Tyre replacement with TPMS

I had my summer tyres on TPMS wheels replaced with a winter set by Elite in Horsham (I think) south of London. What appears to be a small basic tyre/exhaust fitter has a bunch of guys that seem to be the P-Car tyre experts of the UK! Very professional, very knowledgeable, good prices (especially if you're a member of the Porsche Club GB) and good service.

By the way, I'm not a shareholder, just a customer!

Yes the TPMS system is a small radio device attached to the valve which is powered by the kinetic motion of the wheels. I am not sure of the maintenance protocol for them, but they don't look trivial to maintain/replace (I saw the devices on the inside of my wheel rims when the summer tyres were removed).

Elite may well be able to help you. Here's the link:

Good luck. I think I spoke to Dave in sales and a guy called Chris did the install. Both good guys.

    Thanks for the link Trundle997S.

    Re: Tyre replacement with TPMS

Actually, they don't get their power from kinetics,--they are battery powered, and those need to be clecked each tmie a tire is replaced.

    Re: Tyre replacement with TPMS

Interesting - thanks for the tip. When I switch back to Summers in Spring I will ask about that.

    Re: Tyre replacement with TPMS

    Alex :
I'm now in the same position you were, i.e. need to get new tyres on my TPMS wheels.
What did you opt to do? Any further suggestions?

    All :
Bridgestone stock tyres on mine at the moment and they've lasted 12000 miles (a fair bit of slow motorway commuting included in there). I've read lots of the debates on brands, and think I'll stick with Bridgestone, but out of interest what mileage do people get from PS2s? (if you could let me know what type of driving style you have at least I might be able to draw out a vauge comparison!)

    Thanks guys

    Re: Tyre replacement with TPMS

What about Bridgestone Potenza RE960 AS? They may not be 'max performance' but they are 'ultra high performance' tyres ranked very highly on Tire Rack. They cost much less and last a lot longer. Leawood911 has been enthusing about them a lot.

    Re: Tyre replacement with TPMS

I have the Bridgestones on my s cabrio and have gotten excellent mileage. I'll be turning 10,000 miles this weekend and they look great!
