    Rear Main Seal

Argh - my new 997S has the dreaded RMS problem. Anyone else have this issue? It is in the shop for several days while they obtain the part(s).

I thought they had fixed this silly issue.

    Cheers

    Re: Rear Main Seal

Will probably never be fixed. The seal is huge in diameter and that is bad because velocities of spinning oil are so great (my theory); unlike smaller diameter seals it is just prone to leak. The good news (I hear) is once they replace it, it should never leak again.

    Re: Rear Main Seal

The factory should simply implement "Do it right the first time" principle.

    Re: Rear Main Seal

    sorry for that good buddy

How did you find out? please post details...

    Re: Rear Main Seal

I have had it in my 996 (had to pay repairs out of my own pocket since was out of warranty by then), and hope I don't get it in my 997. Its not fixed apparently in the type 997, but what it does seem is that the frequency of apperarance in the 997 is much less than in the 996 which was ridiculous.

    Re: Rear Main Seal

There is also a theory I've heard that the relatively long distance from the last crank journal to the flywheel and the heavy dual-mass flywheel allows vibrations that can cause a slight mis-alignment, and leaks, if the assembly is not perfectly balanced....

    Re: Rear Main Seal

I have heard of it happening twice.

It's much too early IMO to compare the frequency of the problem in 996 with 997. Hell, nobody really knows the frequency of the problem in the 996 do they?

Incidentally, the 986 and 987 are equally prone to RMS leaks, but you don't hear as much complaining about it on those sites.

    Re: Rear Main Seal

    Sorry to hear that....
I wish they fix it quickly.
How many miles did you do before the RMS leak

    Re: Rear Main Seal

I had a 2001 boxster s and at 53k miles my RMS started to leak. The dealer would not cover the repair b/c it was out of warranty (I thought that due to the common nature of the problem they would have done something...) so I had it fixed and then a week later it leaked again... so they replaced it again and guess what. Still leaked. They said that the only thing I could do was replace the engine .
So instead I just sold it to them. One good thing was that now i have a 06 s coming . Makes me a little nervous to hear that Porsche still can not get this fixed. And by the way, on the boxster boards this is a vey common issue, and the end result is typically that Porsche cant fix it....

Yes, add THAT to a huge main seal and system integrity is stretched to it's limits; I guess.

I hear if the car is warrentied, Porsche will attempt three repairs. If none are successful they put a new engine in the car.

The latest news on RMS repair is that Porsche has developed a new tool which they use to seat the new seal. This has apparently resulted in many succeses. So many that "they" say that once the seal is replaced it doesn't leak again.

    Re: Rear Main Seal

It is a defect of the M96 engine design and its manufacture.

Look at the dimensions of the RMS in the above posted photo.

The seal is extremely large to fit a critical part that can suffer minor variations due to the casting technology used.

Some people have also blamed the M96 RMS problems on the crankshaft mounting design that allows slight pertubations of its axis.

Previous Porsche engines had problem areas due to parts, not their basic engine design or manufacture process.

Due to the technology of investment casting and Porsches M96
precision engine design, you are gambling when you buy one that your engine will be structurally trouble free.

If it was just a parts issue, like the seals were defective,
it would all be a simpler matter.

TT and Gt3 engines are unaffected by this because their orifices are precison machined rather than cast in place
    as the M96 motors are.

Thanks Jim, THAT was the final piece of information I needed to "fully" understand this problem.

    Re: Rear Main Seal

I started seeing oil on the floor in my garage. Not a lot, but enough to concern me. I have also been going through more oil that what even I consider normal for a porsche, 1/2 qt every couple thousand miles. The car only has 12K miles on it so I guess that I am lucky it is under warranty.

I will post more information as I find it out.

    Cheers
    Nick

    Re: Rear Main Seal

    I have a 997 GT3RS with the RMS issue.
