Ask a pro, but I think they are essentially identical. On the base Carrera model the shifter had a black cap in '05 and I believe a stainless steel in '06. But I don't know of any changes to the S. Of course, more options became available in '06 - a wider choice of wheels, etc.

some things I can remember:
- the wind deflector of the sunroof changed to reduce wind noise
- PCM got mp3 capability since late April '05
- option power kit available for '06 997S (cannot be retrofitted to '05, so there might have been changes to engine/exhaust/cats, but my service guy claims it's just due to missing homologation for '05)
- option bi-color leather available in '06
- IIRC, option TPMS available for US in '06 (at least German cars had option TPMS in '05 already)

correct, ewi.. TPMS added as my06 option

The only other thing I can think of (on USA cars) is that for 2006, all 997 models have the passenger airbag deactivation system (including console warning light> pic below) integrated as standard factory equip.
(deactivation system automatically turns OFF the passenger airbag if weight on passenger seat falls below a certain #-- to prevent injury from airbag deployment if a child seat or small child is sitting in passenger seat)
....2005 models required a dealer-installed Tequipment kit --$500. approx cost incl. parts+labor IIRC-- (with manual on/off keyed switch) if owners wanted the passenger airbag deactivation capability.

Not sure about this, but 05 cars might have pouches attached to the lower back of the seats. 06 cars are missing them. You know - the stretchy things that you can stuff maps and small towels, etc into.
EDITED: Went and checked vast photo library. Here's an 05 car with the seat pouches. My 06 is denuded-of-pouches.

I think you'll find that they were dropped on the changeover from 996 to 997 and were in fact only fitted to the so-called "sports seat" on the 996.

That's right. The pouches at the back of the adaptive sport seats in my '05 997S were deleted in '06 cars. They might be practical to someone - I never used them - but they look out of place at the back of a sport seat.I remember that someone said that a pouche delete option will come for '06 cars but I'm not sure if that ever came. I rather think that Porsche dropped the pouches to be able to offer option sport seats back painted in exterior color and make some more bucks

It's funny because my early 06 has that handy plug. It's like they simply stopped doing it when they ran out of parts... .

Perhaps it is just RHD models, but I have been down on my hands and knees checking, just in case I had gone completely mad (only a short journey). I have no power source by the passengers knee, (rt knee for RHD of course). I remember lamenting it when I took delivery and it has not grown back. Surely I am not the only one?
