Why do you think it's bad as a main SUV?

well. i didnt mean its bad as in inferior...
it just handles so differently from a modern car that the average driver who is not into cars might have issues with the way this car goes around bends

feels more like surfing or skiing than driving

indeed it is comical....especially if its a corner and you go slightly spirited.....wouldnt mind a virtual horizon :)

Did I say that? Smiley I would love to own a G63 but for the German Autobahn, a Cayenne Turbo S or a BMW X5/6M probably make more sense. Depends... The only problem would be my wife: She isn't a fan of the G63, it looks too "outdated" and not stylish enough to her (this is actually the reason I love the G63, it is special).

If I had the money for such a car, I would get a G63 in a heartbeat.

Why would you assume I was directing it at you rather than the person who gave it a review?

    Re: G63 this time round

I want a G-Class, but it's too outdated and near EOL for me to spend so much on one. I'd rather get one that 600 lbs lighter, has an S-Class interior, and has some sort of higher efficient powertrain, hopefully an EV at some point.

I only want one because I think it's cool. Don't really care about anything else. I'd rather it got 40 mpg and had the performance of a Smart.

well, that is not a G anymore then.

that's the difference between vintage and retro.

    Re: G63 this time round

ok, second drive today.....about 100 kms city traffic and urban desert roads.

car felt much better....so basically I am getting accustomed to its behaviour and can anticipate what it will do.

on bad roads its magnificient...just swallows potholes and road imperfections.

gobs of torque. watching the tachometer you can swiftly accelerate to about 80-90 km/h without reaching 3k rpm

sound is awesome. windows closed, a/c and music on you just hear what seems to be a spitfire in close proximity.

it does not grab any attention by the locals (they are more fascinated by modern cars or a 7 series or s class) all the tourists turn their heads which actually is fine by me.

suspension setup on the straights is very comfortable....the tires being 275/50 seem to actually aid the suspension in cleaning out shudders on bad roads.

cannot really comment on the transmission yet, as I am still breaking in the car and being smooth with the throttle.

basically I think today I focused on what the car in fact can do versus yesterdays 'let's see what it cant do' and drove it for what it is and not in comparison to my current x6m or my past cayenne turbos.

needless to say its a very thirsty engine...

very happy with my decision, especially considering that I have been interested in it since it was in G55 guise and never bit the bullet.

    Re: G63 this time round

Glad to hear that, Sherif. devil Especially the fact that locals think it is an old car, is a good thing (I think). Tourists? Who cares about tourists?! Most of them probably drive a small hatchback or station wagon/minivan back home, so of course the G63 is an eye catcher for them. angry

    Re: G63 this time round

Over 3 years and change and 21000km I averaged 24.4L/100km, mostly city driving.

There is one quirk about the transmission, at city 90 degree right hander, in off throttle turning, at least in my car, the transmission doesn't really want to engage the torque converter unless I give it more throttle than I want to, so it's a bit sluggish on the corner exit, or it screams it's way out of the corner if I give it enough throttle.

IMO these two complement each other. In the sense that they are so different that you can cover all your SUV needs with these.

The 918 is only 14l? Quite impressive. I know that Porsche advertises ridiculously low consumption numbers and I never took them seriously but 14l for the 918? Quite impressive. Smiley

I have decided to keep the x6m....it'll do for airport drop-offs pick-ups etc.

with the crazy  import taxes we are paying here its not worth getting a new one....its no different in looks and/or performance.

One of my cousins, he lived in Brazil in a time were import taxes for luxury cars were insane (don't know about now), bought a Mercedes SL through a diplomat of a (different) South American country and drove it with diplomatic plates for five years in Sao Paolo before he sold it again. The car (and the bribe Smiley) were only a third of what he had to pay officially, a really good deal for him.

Just trying to give you some ideas here...but I guess you know better than me. Smiley

    Re: G63 this time round

RC, the same applies here. diplomatic plates, customs plates (6 months per year) which is a grey zone which I don't do.

we normally used to pay 240% customs plus 45% sales tax on cars above 2 litres.

having signed the GATT agreement the customs duties had to be reduced over a 10 year period to reach 0% in 2019.

now customs duties stand at 54% plus 45% sales tax.

naturally sales tax is applied to cost of goods including customs duties and freight plus various other charges of a few % here and there that makes up another 10-12 %

    Re: G63 this time round

    thank you gentlemen.

    another 180km drive today.

car feels better and better....surely a point of me getting used to how it handles....

as I drove it a bit more swiftly, torque steering when accelerating is mad...you have to wrestle the steering wheel.

overall, a very cool car....or better said a very cool concept. its just very different from the many many other suv's out there.

but I would never consider it in any form other than amg. not even the G500. the fun lies in the contradiction the engine vs chassis. then again, I added it as a fun car and for city cruising and not to haul stuff with it or go on longer trips with lots of luggage.
