new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

Great info and knowledgeable posters here!

Torn about what car to purchase. I've driven used 996 and new 987S. Both were phenomenal to drive. Boxster might have been a little more fun but I might prefer a fixed roof over my head. My bottom line is I'm getting the car for the driving experience, not as a status symbol. I'm coming from an E36 M3, which was great but a little soft and sedate in my opinion. I want to maximize performance for the dollar. Even considering the new Z06 but can't quite get into the styling the way I do Porsches. I am concerned about RMS issues with both a used 996 and with the Boxster. I don't want to spend much more than $55k. If I got a 996 it would be a 2002 or 2003 with some factory warranty remaining. The car will be a daily driver. Thoughts?

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

    Which model 996? If it's a C2, I'd say go for the new 987S.

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

    Probably a plain C2 although I'd consider a 2001 TT or 2002 C4S if I could get it for $55K or less.

Go for the new Vette first, and then any of the Porsche's after that.

That way, you'll appreciate the Porsche all the more when you get around to it.

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

All the vettes I've seen still have dealer markup. That 1-4 shift thing is pretty bogus too.

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

For what it's worth, I spent a lot of time test driving (multiple drives) in a 996, and I decided on a 987S. I felt that I shouldhave preferred the 911, but I didn't. I think I'm happier with the chuckability of mid-engines. The Boxster S felt like a perfect leap for my from my Lotus Elise - fairly similar feel being mid-engined, just much meatier. Haven't tried a Vette, but have had a number of TVRs. There is something about the road presence and sound of cars like that that I will always keep being lured back to, but I see the 987 as probably the most balanced head vs. heart car decision I've ever made.

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

I have driven all. I worried about the same decision. The vette is a monster, the 1-4 shift can be overcome with a $20.00 resistor but I couldn't overcome the thoughts of what will happen with ALL the electronics over time.(auto door locks,no key ignition, tire pressure monitoring on and on)plus listen to the stereo...not much fidelity.Porsche Bose much better. The general isn't known for quality. The 996 is exceptional ,however I wanted a ragtop...easy decision a new 987S.$55K can buy you a nice car,not hevily optioned but one hell of a ride.If you drive it like it deserves, you may need a neck brace and something to get the bugs out of your teeth...smilin'and cornering, a porsche cornerstone.

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

You can get a Vette at MSRP or less, maybe try Lee Johnson Chevrolet in Kirkland or look in Autoweek ads for dealers who deal.

The new Vette is pretty well built for a US high volume car and will cost way less to repair and maintain if you keep it out of warranty.

It isnt as precise or as well balanced as a Boxster, and it doesnt have that 911 feel like a 996. However, it will
leave either a Boxster or a 996 as a speck in your rear view mirror in a straight line.

It has more room inside and is the same size dimensionally as a 997. It will hold golf clubs and suitcases no problem.
But no way is it built like a Porsche and no way does it handle or brake like a Porsche, but its very very very good on a race track when driven hard.

For US street driving and US speed limits it makes sense. It also makes sense if you want peace of mind on a long trip. No one likes being broken down in Idaho, Montana or Wyoming because of Porsche electrical gremlins giving false postives, sudden electrical failure or oil and cooling issues.

The stereo head unit is easily changed in a Vette. Porsche
has a unique BUS system and you are stuck with what is issued. Stereo upgrades on Vettes are simple and easy, on recent Porsches, forget it.

I hate to say this but Porsche has very complex electrical systems now, besides RMS which is not cheap to fix out of warranty, that in some ways recent Porsches seem best to lease new and drive in urban areas only.

For 55K you can get a really nice used 964 or 993. They are more reliable and durable than 996's or Boxsters. Check out autotrader on line and www.parcars.com/parall.htm

    Good luck and shop carefully!

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

Go for the 987S. You should be able to get one with decent options (maybe with sticker up to $60K), especially if you take one off the lot. My understanding is that if you order now, you'll get an '06 in Sept. or Oct. and probably not as large a discount.

After driving C6 and S, the C6 felt like a bunch of parts bolted together and the S felt like it was carved out of a solid block of steel. Go to corvetteforum and scroll down the list of problems people are having with electronics and other components. I thought the C6 torque was amazing, but that was about it. The C6's are being discounted. The last time I looked, GM was taking $1500 and another $500 off in two different programs. Dealers will probably take another $1K or more on coupes, less on convertibles.

The 987 is built to last; C6 is not IMHO.

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

Thanks for all the replies. Leaning towards 987S although still tempted by used 996. Great insights!

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

Go for the Cayman if you want mid-engined chuckability and hard roof.

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

I was facing the exact same choice... 2-3 year old 996 C4 or new Boxster S. I went with the Boxster as I like new cars, and will bide my time until the 997 C4s are coming onto the market.. hoping that the 987S holds value a tad better than the 996 over the next year or two, considering the fact that the 911s are just undergoing a model change.

What can I say.. I haven't regretted my choice so far.

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

DO NOT get a used 996, get a 987 S if you really want a Porsche. The new Corvette seems also to be a great car, all reviews over here done by german car magazines have been very positive.

The problem is always how people define the word "sportiness": for some people, straight line performance means sportiness. For others sportiness means a stiff suspension setup and a bumpy ride. And others define sportiness by handling capability.

So if you want a perfect daily driver for twists and turns, get the 987 S. If you want a powerful "do-it-all" car, get the Corvette. Personally, I'm the handling type of guy but to each his own I guess.

Oh, not to forget: especially in the US, a Porsche might be the "cooler" car compared to a Corvette.

im really curious, how much does a corvette cost in germany and how much does a 911 cost in germany?

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

hey man why wont you answer me?!

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

I've seen a demo Corvette 6 for about 70k Euro online (not sure what the regular pricelist looks like), about as much as a loaded Boxster 987 S demo car. A new standard 911 C2 (997), stark naked, starts at 75k Euro.

Porsche prices can be accessed on www.porsche.de (911/Car Configurator). One thing to be aware of with German prices is that VAT/tax is already included.

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

so your saying that in europe the Corvette costs just about as much as a 911?

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

Raced a 996 Cabrio and beat it in my 987S.

Why not get a used 996?? I would, with the 997 out, you can get some awesome deals at the moment...

Re: new 987S vs. used 996 vs. new Vette

i was facing the exact same decision , only i had an slk55 in there too.

i decided to go for the 987s due to the p-factor (copyright Dr.phil) and beacuse i did not want to drive an older generation vehicle (967). If i was still living in U.S i would of probably allocated more decision making points to the vette (eventhough its made of plastic, over heats and has the suckiests interior. but it makes up for it by having sex appeal)

In Dubai and the rest of the world excluding N.A.
American cars dont have as much respect or prestige as european cars do. So there is very little sex appeal when it comes to the vette but on the other hand the porsche has all the sex appeal it needs. Jut like that english dude jeremy clarkson (or whatver his name is) said "we dont need a vette we already have our 911, but that doesn't stop the americans from trying to sell it to us"

the reason why i did not opt for a slk55 was beacause there are too many around and its just an sl wanna be. atleast the 987 is being marketed as a mid engined roadster and not a cheaper 997.

well hope this helps, i know its a very tough choice. just make sure you like the car and dont buy it because of other peoples tastes or else you'll regret it everytime you the see the car on the steets. you'll be like "thats the car i was gonna get".

Just remember Porsche's have sex appeal globally, does the vette?
