This sounds very promising. However, should this car be produced the only way  to save the 911 would be to price the 960 close to $300,000. That would put it into direct competition with Ferrari, McLaren and Lambo. I am not sure they want that fight. They remain the most profitable auto company on the planet. They haven't lost market share. Why bother?yes

There will be no 960 as long as the R8 lives.

and that guy is high on crack if he thinks a mid engine quad turbo car can weight 1400kg.

The next generation Porsche V8 are hot Vs, there is simply no room for quad turbos inside, only alternative would be using the twin scroll turbos like those in BMWs.

This is why a R8 makes no sense, said it over and over again. Smiley

Unfortunately, the R8 could run out of luck once the V10 disappears. No V10, no more good sales for the R8 I'm afraid and it could disappear. One reason people get the R8 is the fantastic V10 engine.

SV time is never near any 918 time either, and often loses to cars slower than the 918...

I'll believe Lamborghini times when I actually see them.

There is a theory that VW Group doesn't want Lamborghini to post these record numbers and that Lamborghini is advised (by VW Group) to keep a low profile with test reviews, no assistance either, so cars do not achieve these record times. This could explain why AMS got an underpowered R8 from Audi for the Supertest (surprisingly, in other reviews, the R8 had the same performance as the Huracan) and why both, the Huracan but especially the Aventador SV, had setup issues during some reviews because the reviewers received false tire pressure and chassis setup values from Lamborghini. Smiley Unless of course Lamborghini is really that negligent and not caring but I highly doubt it.

Speaking of tire pressures: My R8 is amazing on the track with the comfort (up to 270 kph) tire pressure but with the recommended tire pressure for Vmax (330 kph), the car isn't too impressive on the track (heavy oversteer followed by a mild understeer). With the lower tire pressure the handling is very neutral, absolutely fantastic.

Thats really cruel if true, man.  Lambo finally has the ability to prove to the world (and the intranet) that they are good drivers cars, but they have to deliberately make they're cars worse so they don't offend anyone.  I hope they soon do finally get taken off the leash one day.  Side note, do you know if Domenacalli is any reason why this happened, with him coming from fezza and all?

Have they produced a dedicated set for the 918? This would mean the GT3 RS can now also be fitted with Trofeo's given the size of the rears is the same? Really curious what this'll do to 918 laptimes!

Yes they are the proper size for the 918/GT3RS. Which means the RS can use them too.

But I do believe they are of generic sidewall construction, so not weight optimized like the N0 N1 version of the Cup2s, unlike the 12C platform optimized Trofeo Rs fitted to the P1.

Heres a nice little tidbit I saw from an SV owner on instagram regarding the N-ring time as well as a hint about its full potential:

    • Trofeo Rs come out from factory and dealers as options starting September I believe. In addition, EVERY single automotive test of the McLaren and Porsche has been with the Race options (Trofeo R and titanium exhaust) and Weissach (Lighter wheels, more agressive aero) respectively. Nobody has used a Lamborghini with race option from Santa'gata being Factory Race Exhaust w/ Exhaust tune. I have only exhaust tune on my car from factoryand I am hitting 155 on the straight at Thermalbefore slowing down at brake zone 3. Oh and I've only been to that track once 😂😂😂 If Randy Pobst had a race option SV I believe he would have decimated his time. With Trofeo Rs braking would have improved along with Acceleration, allowing this car to possibly compete or even surpass the performance of the 918.

Seriously? You think a bi-turbo charged V6 "960" could survive next to a V10 R8? Even with a bi-turbo V8, the "960" could have issues because people would still go for the R8. The main reason I got my R8 is the engine. I assume that this is the same reason for most R8 buyers out there. A 960 would only make sense when there is no R8 anymore...or if Audi switches to a bi-turbo V8 or V6 as well. The R8 cannot be "superior" (engine) to the "960" out of marketing reasons.

So my assumption is: If there will be a "960", the R8 will be no more or both cars will use a similar engine base. The Audi would probably be substantially cheaper, while the "960" would compete in a different price (and maybe even performance) category. Without V10 engine, Audi would sell probably not even half the numbers of the R8 they sell now, so I guess when the V10 disappears, the R8 could disappear for good as well. Then, the way for a "960" would be wide open... The fate of the R8 will come with the new Porsche sportscar platform (next 911, also good for mid engined setup, etc.) and if VW Group decides to offer a next generation R8 on that (very flexible) platform. I highly doubt however that the V10 engine will survive... Smiley

I think the main reason why we will not see a 960 is to protect the nimbus of the 911.
The 918 didn't hurt, too far away, but a permanent model above the 911 this will hurt the 911 (the cash cow of Porsche) on the long run.

So they decide to sell this kind of cars under another brand. For the whole group it doesn't matter if Audi/Lambo or Porsche sell this kind of car.

Look at the new 718 Boxster/Cayman they sacrifice this model to protect the 911.
The 718 sell very bad for a new model. Almost all german dealers now exchange 718 quotes to 911 quotes. The 991.2 sell better than ever.

The gain margin for the 911 is much better than for the Cayman and of course the 911 represents Porsche and the heritage, it is a "classic" Porsche, even if the latest generation has nothing to do with the first 911. For Porsche, it is a no-brainer to support and protect the 911.

However, I do not think that a 960 would hurt 911 sales too much. Maybe 911 Turbo S sales, maybe 911 GT3/RS sales, maybe but not 911 Carrera sales (the majority of 911 models). Keep in mind that a 960 would have very limited luggage room, only two seats, it would also be much flashier than a 911 and cost would (very likely) be also higher because Porsche couldn't and wouldn't place the 960 in the under 200k EUR price segment.

Most importantly: The 911 Carrera is one of the most used business cars in it's class in Germany and this would be impossible with a 960.

Like Whoopsy said before (I assume he got his information from a Porsche employee, same as me...): The 960 cannot come because of the current R8. If someone has the chance to drive the new R8 V10 Plus, just do it and you'll understand why. Especially since Porsche couldn't use the V10 engine and would very likely need to use a bi-turbo charged V8 instead. Once the R8 is gone or gets a different engine, the 960 will be much more likely. Sad but true.

There is a reason I chose the new R8 V10 Plus, it wasn't exactly my first choice (I wanted a used first generation model as a weekend toy only) but after the first test-drive, I was madly in love with this car. Whoopsy, with his many different amazing cars and of course the fantastic 918, might now understand this but from my point of view, the new R8 is exactly what I always expected (and hoped for) from Porsche. Smiley

It's really irrelevant what else is out there or in the same brand. McLaren didn't exist a few years ago, now they do, and they'll sell a couple thousand per year at least.

There is someone out there who doesn't like a Huracan or R8. They may like a 960 or whatever. There is someone out there who will buy all three. Crayphile on here went from 458 to 12C to 650S to Huracan to 675 LT, practically year after year from what I can tell.

If you make a 960, Whoopsy might just buy one even if he already has other cars in the same niche.

As long as it looks different, that's good enough.

    Actually I would probably buy a Huracan before I buy a 960.Smiley

But yeah, when the 960 comes I will get one.

I am still waiting for McLaren to get their shit together so I can buy another. They do make amazing cars but their current strategy of keep pissing off current owners by putting out a 'new model' every year is putting me off.

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

Honestly I think McLaren has the right strategy. Why slow down the pace if you can make better cars every year? Just to say you own the latest and greatest? They are the outsider vs the other guys, they need to do something different to break through, having new models often is one way to do it.

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

It would be nice if they offer an upgrade program for previous cars, 650S body kits for 12C owners, power kit for everyone to get up to 688 HS, etc, since al later cars are basically the same under the bodywork anyway.

This would ease the horrible depreciation hit.

Some say they had more satisfaction flushing $100 bills down the toilet than selling a McLaren, at least they can use the bills to wipe their ass.

Getting the new 540C could be a nice idea...pretty cheap for a McLaren, "raw" car, fast, good looking...  Also, not much money to loose on this one...I think. This thing costs in Germany as much as a fully optioned 911 Carrera S, no kidding.
