What is the proper break-in procedure??

i know that i should keep it under 4k rpm and vary the rpm alot. i've read that the 1st oil change or service is not till 20000 miles but that sounds awfully long. so i m just curious what did you all do during your break-ins. please share.

Re: What is the proper break-in procedure??

Welcome to the forum, Aristal! I just followed the manual to the letter. Patience is a virtue, right?

Re: What is the proper break-in procedure??

thanks Holminator. i am still waiting for the car to get here, but i am just reading up in the meanwhile so i can be ready to go where the car arrives. i've downloaded a copy of the owner's manual in pdf form but can't seem to find where it says anything about break-in or maintenance schedule. care to give me the page number?? thanks in advance.

    Here it is:

Break in hints for the first
    2,000 miles/3,000 kilometers
The following tips will be helpful in obtaining optimum
    performance from your new Porsche.
Despite the most modern, high-precision manufacturing
methods, it cannot be completely avoided
that the moving parts have to wear in with each
other. This wearing-in occurs mainly in the first
    2,000 miles/3,000 km.
    Therefore:
    f Preferably take longer trips.
f Avoid frequent cold starts with short-distance
    driving whenever possible.
f Avoid full throttle starts and abrupt stops.
f Do not exceed maximum engine speed of
    4,200 rpm (revolutions per minute).
f Do not run a cold engine at high rpm either in
    Neutral or in gear.
f Do not let the engine labor, especially when
driving uphill. Shift to the next lower gear in
time (use the most favorable rpm range).
f Never lug the engine in high gear at low
speeds. This rule applies at all times, not just
    during the break-in period.
f Do not participate in motor racing events,
sports driving schools, etc. during the first
    2,000 miles/3,000 kilometers.
There may be a slight stiffness in the steering,
gear-shifting or other controls during the break-in
    period which will gradually disappear.

    Phil

Re: What is the proper break-in procedure??

never heard the verb "to lug" before.

I lug, we lug, you lug...

    What is lug ???

Re: What is the proper break-in procedure??

thank you all for the help. so when did you guys do your very first oil-change?? 20k miles or right after break-in period is over or even sooner??

Re: What is the proper break-in procedure??

I've been meaning to post about this, but in my manual, which may be the same as the UK version, there are far fewer constraints than the US version... There is no mention of keeping the revs below 4200rpm for instance. The manuals at home and I'm at work...but I'll scan and post when I get home....

BTW Aristal,I did the same as you, dnloaded the manual etc, in prepn for delivery of the car. I took a week off and we took a few day trips. It was a great week. Next time(?) we might do the factory/tourist delivery thing and drive around Eurpoe
