V1 Hardwire Install....Which wire to tap?

I tried to hardwire my radar yesterday, and came across a problem.....I wanted to tap into the map light, and had read a post on the forum that said the hot wire was the stripey one....well pretty much all my wires were stripey. The two map lights, and dome light are all fed from a single connector (attached to a circuit board) from this connector the wiring harness had brown/red, brown/purple, brown/white & plain brown (can't remember the exact combos....but there were lots of stripes.)
Could someone tell me which one is hot
    Many Thanks

Re: V1 Hardwire Install....Which wire to tap?

I left hardwiring my Origin B2 GPS / laser detector to a professional auto-electrician. Not brave enough to attempt it myself with all those sophisticated electronics in the car.

Re: V1 Hardwire Install....Which wire to tap?

i agree dreamcar, that's the best solution. You pay a little extra but at the end you save time, and dont mess with car's electronics.Look for a capable electrician thought not to harm your car's circuits.

Re: V1 Hardwire Install....Which wire to tap?

If you run the flat wire under the headliner, down the A pillar, under the rubber door seal and to the fusebox, you can plug in directly into the tiptronic fuse socket (which is empty unless you have a tip) without splicing anything.

Re: V1 Hardwire Install....Which wire to tap?

Take a 15W spare, wap the V1 wire around it and stick it in the slot that is 3 down from the top and 5 from the left. Then attach the ground wire to metal near the steering column. Worked for me on the Boxster S and now the 911.

Gratis butt shot in front of my elementary school this weekend--Lindenwold No. 4. Went up to Philadelphia yesterday for a cheesesteak--any excuse to drive my own private amusement park!

I got my V1 from my dealer at cost and they hardwired it for me for free.....(only works at deal time!!)

    That's how I did it.

Re: V1 Hardwire Install....Which wire to tap?

Thanks for the advise...I'm pretty sure that I want to wire from the dome light (short cable run) & I have a particular idea on how to conceal the wire. Zeke if you read this thread, could you tell me which wire you used.
    Thanks
    Jason

Re: V1 Hardwire Install....Which wire to tap?

radar detectors are illegal here. So must be sure it works efficiently to take the risk to install one. Does it advertise you soon enough to slow down everytime, sometimes, or is it a funny gadget ? I tried one of these stuff some years ago : never worked soon enough, and i had to pay the bill everytime...

Re: V1 Hardwire Install....Which wire to tap?

It depends on the type of speed limit enforcement used by local police. It is more difficult to get a warning in enough time to slow down with laser or instant on radar. In my state (WV) the state police are always sitting in the freeway median with Ka band constantly on. The V1 alerts about 1 mile ahead before there is visual contact. This is plenty of time to slow down and move to the right lane.

In Maryland they use laser and I usually see the police car about the time the V1 goes off resulting in a quick stab of the brake pedal. Many times in this situation you are caught by the time you decide to slow down.

Re: V1 Hardwire Install....Which wire to tap?

Thank you, Mark997S, for this excellent info.
They will use laser soon or later, if they don't already
So why take the risk of an illegal stuff if it is useless ?

    They're legal here.

FWIW in NZ, each speeding ticket attracts demerit points, number of points determined by speed over the limit. Once over a certain no of points, your licence is suspended, (for 3 mths I think)... reason enough for a legal detector IMO
