According to Churchill Insurance, 600 brand-new cars are crashed within 24 hours of being collected by their owners and the number rises to 3,000 within a week.
Unfamiliarity with their new cars seems to be the main cause, probably not helped by the number of extra features fitted to modern cars. The company says that Porsches are the most likely cars to be crashed on their first day - probably due to a surfeit of enthusiasm over skill. In fact luxury cars in general are more likely to be crashed early than mainstream cars. Whether that is because they are faster, have more distracting toys or simply owners who can afford to be less careful is an open question."
