    Summer tires and spring time

Spring is here, the roads are clear of snow and ice and the snow on the ground is starting to melt away. Now it is time to pick up my new 997S. The question is ... when is it safe to drive on summer tires(PS2's)

Mornings are still cool and below 0C, daytime temps are above freezing, but still not warm (4C). So knowing that the summer tires are not recommended for temps below 7C, am I asking for trouble driving the car in these temps at break in speeds?

Re: Summer tires and spring time

You answered to the question. Follow the temperature recommendation. es ist einfach!

Re: Summer tires and spring time

the PS2's tire compound sacrifices traction due to cold temperature at anything below around
40 degrees F (4 degrees C). I would drive GINGERLY--even on dry roads--if driving when you could reasonably calculate tire and/or road surface temp to be anything below
40F (4C) degrees....I almost learned a lesson re: this the hard way in my E46 M3. Unfortunately, BMW DSC or Porsche PSM cannot defy ALL laws of physics!

Just one of those instances where the incredible adhesion enjoyed by these great high-perf tires in summer weather unfortunately has an equal and inversely proportional (diminished) ability in the cold.

    excellent advice

Re: Summer tires and spring time

    one advice

PS 2 are crap in wetness and low temperatures.
Be careful and don't risk anything

Re: Summer tires and spring time

    Thanks for the advice....

So now what, cold mornings and frost are possible until mid-May. So do I have my dealer mount a set of winter tires for the rest of March and April? Seems kind of odd considering the rest of the cars in the family are having their winter tires swapped to summer tires next week!

Is there another tire for the 997S that are better in the shoulder months(March, April, October, November) for the North East?

Re: Summer tires and spring time

You're up there in the Frozen Tundra, just take it easy through the rest of this month until the ground thaws a bit more. You will still have a better handling vehicle than anything else out there, just go easy.

The problem I had with PS2's (and also Conti SportContact2 before them) on my '03 M3 (when I lived in Ohio, btw) was that at temps hovering at or below 40 degrees F I would head out on one of those early spring days when it was cold but there was no snow and the sun was shining-- so to the eyes it did not look much like Winter at all.

The tires would seem nice and grippy on certain roads (my own street, for instance, was fine--which was blond textured concrete), but minutes later I would drive onto subsequent roadways paved with asphalt or whatever and on the first curve, without warning, with my oblivious one-year-old daughter in the back seat, almost launched myself into the ditch.
Lateral grip failed, braking being applied by the M3's Dynamic Stability Control mostly failed -- scary, especially since I was not really 'pushing it' by any stretch.

But above 40F the tires would stick nicely, and I found full-on rain handling to be incredible (I am actually a little puzzled by one post above lamenting wet handling).
OldMan, Go to a few different parking lots (out of the RCMounties' surveillance, of course) on a chilly day and give it a whirl at full G's to gauge the behaviour.

Don't worry about getting proper snow tires until next November, in the meantime just be wary of different roadway surfaces potentially presenting inconsistent conditions in cornering traction.

    Sorry abt the long post;
btw, when you're driving a 997, you are never Old!!!

Re: Summer tires and spring time

    Damian,

Thanks for your great response. Maybe I am naive, but my friends in the UK drive their 911's with summer tires year round. Never heard of any problems in the Uk winter, which is cooler than a Montreal spring day. I will just avoid early morning drives until the weather warms up.

BTW, I am not old, the nickname was given to by a younger friend when my first child was born. I continue to use it because it is such a contradiction to reality (at least to me).

Re: Summer tires and spring time

I used to export to Liverpool/London M6 corridor back in the early '90's.
What I love about British roads is that they are constructed from that wonderful gravel/rubber/asphalt composite which seems to last and remain ripple-free for decades.

From a frictional standpoint, British roads really don't sustain the same deep freeze (except maybe N. Scotand?) of an Ohio or Montreal which
takes awhile to thaw come spring. Pure speculation here-- but maybe the aggregate effect re your friends in England is that Z-rated tires are compatible year'rounders if tire-compound hardening is somewhat offset by a bit warmer and more grated roadway surfaces.

Try the large parking lot 'doughnut experiment' (with cold Pilot Sport 2 tires) when outdoor temp is 0 deg C, then try again at 8 or 10 deg C and note the improvement. Cheers.

some good PS2 stuff at this linK:

Re: Summer tires and spring time

I called up Michelin and asked them what temperature the PS2 were good to. They said there is no limitation, other than not to drive them on snow or ice. I have the distinct feeling that they have no clue...

So I will take the car out and do some testing. Should be fun!
