Re: 997 GT3 winter testing in Norway!!

This car could be a C4S in disguise!

Why I think it's not widebody

As Moogle said, it's been discussed on and on and on....
Here's a pic I took last weekend, and it's about the same angle as the pic of the Aerokit cup equipped 997, about two meters behind the car with pic taken from eye level looking down.
IMO they look the same width, backep up by photographic evidence.
We'll know soon enough from official source hopefully.

Re: Why I think it's not widebody

The tach actually looks like at least 9000 or 10000.
In the photgraph there are 6 points visible. And the first visible one starts at 11 o clock. There looks like there is at least space for 3 or 4 more points.

Re: Why I think it's not widebody

Best i could determine was it went up to "8", as the "7" is quite distinct...before it ran into the LCD inset.

Re: Why I think it's not widebody

Cold weather test mules for the Cayman's 3.4L turbo motor , hence the central exhaust and what looks like a turbo in the lower left of car. Rest of car is std 997 with the aerokit to make poeple think it's a 997 GT3 mule .

I think thats the best explanation so far

Re: 997 GT3 winter testing in Norway!!

That could make some sense, BUT the cayman is said to be realdy already. AND the cars look too neat. If they had been just mules, the slides in the front boneet would not have been integrated that well, same with the vents in the rear wing... just my 2 cnts though.

Re: Why I think it's not widebody

I would have belived in your theory.
However, all GT3 mules have been spotted with central exhausts.

I'm DISSAPOINTED that PDK is NOT coming with GT3.

Maybe PAG noticed all the " manly men " on the M5 boards who were so mad at BMW for wussing out with SMG only on the coming M5 . Of course now there are rumors they have caved in and will have a manual option.
Porsche can keep the 997 GT3 and GT2 as pure and hairy chested as they want with no yaw control and DSG-PDK options . I'll happily tootle along with my PSM/DSG-PDK 997 Turbo.

Re: Why I think it's not widebody

The GT3RS cup cars ALL have central exhaust outlets, so your theory dies.

If that's your theory then why can't this be a test mule for the new 998 with a flat 8 turbo at the rear, or how about the test mule for the upcoming sedan's flat 8 turbo, which would be front engined but they wanted to confuse us all by slapping it into a GT3 looking body.

    Maybe it's a test mule for a 993, or 924.

I'm well aware of the race exhausts and I was having fun with you guys re the Cayman - you took it seriously, LOL!
BTW,on a street car, the only way I see this system workable for a GT3 is if the cats go near the wheel well where the exhaust cans are now and the exhaust is one big can in the middle like the Boxster. OTOH, the worse scenario is incorporating small pup cats just aft of the headers for quicker light off ala 996 Turbo, then incorporating main cats inside the exhaust can, again like current Turbo's 4 cat system , where aftermkt exhaust is not EPA legal since you are removing the main factory cat with non-approved attached aftermarket ones , rasing the cost of turbo aftermarket systems compared to the pure cat back ones for reg 996/997 C2.

You know, I never took it that seriously.
I was trying to say that it is a pretty good theory, but I was hoping that this really is a mule for 997 GT3

I just wish the next GT3 would be a competitor to entry level Ferrari, as it is now with F360s. But with the introduction of F430, Porsche Turbos will have to do it.

Re: Why I think it's not widebody

It's actually a masterstroke by Porsche to offer the GT3 with all the crap WE don't want,(nav, sunroof, etc). Then turn around and charge you for each item delete! They get a broader market share with the dumbed down GT3, and they get the hard core enthusiasts paying even more! It's win-win for the non-motorsport side of Porsche. The icing on the cake is to shove a m97 motor in it!

Re: Why I think it's not widebody

I am really digging the 997 Aerokit.

Re: Why I think it's not widebody

of course there seems to be a debate as to what the car in the pictures actually IS.

is it a 997 with aerokit? whatever

the MOST disturbing thing is that all reputable sources seem to indicate that the 997GT3 will share the same engine as the 997 C2 except with higher displacement and more power. WET SUMP??? have they gone mad?

Re: Why I think it's not widebody

    MKW,

Instead of the Turbo-looking thing hanging down from the left side of the car, maybe it is like you said the catalytic converter since the exhaust is now where the cats used to be.

Let's hope so- and if the single central can is sans a second set of welded on or enclosed cats, aftermarket sport exhausts should be pretty cheap and fully EPA legal !

Re: Why I think it's not widebody

It also looks like the engine might have 2 air filters one for either side.
The rear deck lid has a twin intake, which wouldnt make sense to be just cosmetic styling because its not that visible. I think it may be because with the exaust pipe being in the centre rather than on the sides, the muffler now resides in the place where the air filter is in the current car. I am wondering if this car runs some type of dual air filter system flanking both sides of the intake.

Re: Why I think it's not widebody

Hopefully I'm not just being optimistic, but since I haven't read this before I'll chime in with my guess. The last GT3 had the proper race motor (dry sump) and they had a different exhaust than the race motor. Now why would they bother to put a cup style exhaust if they are moving away from the cup motor? In other words, I hope that this is a small indication that they may have put the proper motor in the 997 GT3.
