    Confusing rumors

    Some of the CAR magazine:

The 911 and Boxster have helped Porsche become the world's most profitable car maker, and theyre still selling so fast Porsche reckons they dont need replacing until 2007-8.
In the meantime, the current 911 gets a heavy rework in 2004. Codenamed 997, it gets upright wings, round headlamps, restyled bumpers and slimmer doors to recreate the warpish profile of the much-loved 993.
Bigger wheels and brakes plus widened suspension are natural, and the cockpit is more like the Cayenne's. The flat six goes from 3.6 up to 3.8l, and power is from 320 to 340bhp. A six-speed tiptronic is optional. The overdue direct petrol injection system will spawn a 375bhp 911S in 2005, between C2/C4 and the Turbo.
Before the 997, we get a second batch of current shape 380bhp GT3's (March 2003) and a Carrera 4S cabrio (mid 2003) and Turbo cabrio (2004).
In 2005, the Boxster gets a visual makeover and more power, and theres a fixed-head coupé version for 2006.
The all-new 911, or 998 is really two cars: a rear-engined flat six 2+2 as well as a V8 or V10 powered mid-engined two seater. This will be the basis of Porsche's next race car.
Add a third sports car to the list (a large front-engined coupe/convertible), and you can see why the Porsche family wants boss Wendelin Wiedeking to extend his contract.

My opinion: A new porsche modelrange like this would be cool,....but every rumor I read is different. Kinda confusing.
I would like to know if you guys know some more.

And what is the status of the Turbo Cabriolet? >> If it will be reality I am going to order one.

    thanks ...

The article is wrong regarding Porsche sales. Porsche has

confirmed they are reducing production because of sluggish sales. They claim it is because of the poor economy and looming war. I believe it has as much to do with over production (thus lack of exclusivity) and lack of interesting models.

They would do well to introduce new models which can be distinguished by styling, power and price.

A couple of weks ago I posed the same question regarding the TT cab. RC our board moderator seemed to think it was a done deal. I am not so sure.

Check out this discussion on upcoming 997

I think the base model will get a 370hp and the "S" models higher. But again non this is confirmed.

    Turbo Cab.

If there are still planing to produce a Turbo/C4 S cab. it'll debut probably in Frankfurt Auto Show in September.

They wouldn't announce anything on the turbo/C4 S cab at this time, that would steal the limelight away from the Cayenne and the GT3.

    Re: Turbo Cab.

Again: A few days ago I saw a C4S Cab test mule

    Re: Confusing rumors

I don't understand why they would divide the 911 lineup into a 2+2 with rear engine and a middle engine two seater, and also add the fourth model line(the front engined GT in the 575 market segment).
I think that the 911 should remain rear engined only, but do you guys think that Porsche might have reached the outmost of this architecture's potential and wants to gradually shift to the mid engine with its sporty model?

    Re: Confusing rumors

It's a known fact that a rear engined car is not the good solution.
Nonetheless, Porsche's engineers have managed to make the 911 one of the best sports cars in the world.
I think that a rear engine is one of the essences of the 911 along with the Flat6.
So I personally think that the next 911 will be rear engined with a flat6 and no mid engined version.
The latter could be a super Boxster or a mini Carrera GT if you prefer, let's call it Boxster GT
    Fanch.

    Re: Confusing rumors

At some point Porsche will recognize that having an engine hang out behind the rear axle is no longer competitive in the 21st century. The GT probably should be the configuration for future Porsche's. However as long as people associate Porsche with a rear engine and buy them Porsche will not change.

Can you imagine a midengine turbo Porsche with its balanced braking and handling characteristic's. WOW

Does anyone else feel that the Boxster could surpass the 911 cabrio as a sports car given a more powerful engine? I have always felt this way, after driving a Boxster S. It's a shame.

    Re: Confusing rumors

Next generation Boxster is to have a coupe version - that would be a smokin' sportscar

    Re: Confusing rumors

    Of course Justin, you're right,
The reason they don't give the Boxster the power it deserves is purely due to marketing, shame...
A boxster with the 3.6L 320hp would simply be sensationnal, remember, it's 150kgs, lighter then the Carrera
    Fanch.

    Re: Confusing rumors

I had A Boxster S 3 years Ago and I was thinkin'/dreaming about a more powerful boxster. That would be Awsome indeed !
I'm now driving a PolarSilver/BoxsterRed 2003 996targa and I'm really about to buy a 996 TurboCab. If a new model range of 911's will show up I think that a front-engined type wouldn't be that bad (as long it is just one type,..just like the 4s or something like that). 997/998 Carrera FR ...imagine that...could have got much better handling. But maybe because of the classic 911 has got the engine in the back, they are making another modelrange like a 911 with front engines. But because of the famous 911 has got the engine in the back, doesn't mean to me that some other Porsche models are bad. As long as it is a better performed car than a 944 924 928 or 968. Would be OK to me!

But as you all read....I'm ready to buy A fast Cabrio...lets hope it will be on the porsche sales !

    Re: Confusing rumors

I think the Carrera GT is what you are looking for Pierre

    Re: Turbo Cab.

    Not necessarily valid but promising.

Some news on Turbo / C4 S cab.

    Re: Turbo Cab.

Thanks Ron...That was some hopeful info.

I'm praying ...996 Turbo Cabriolet.....brilliant! I'm getting exited of only thinking about it !

    More enthusiasts ?

    .....Ciao Pierre

    Looks Good !

It is not a techart right ?.... it looks amazing.
Is this the 996 Turbo Cabrio what porsche is rumored to make ? except for the airintakes in the side and the rear wing, which I like actually.

    Ciao

    Re: Looks Good !

Looks like a Gemballa to me...
