    Transmission Changes?

    Is it possible to change gear ratios on the new GT3? If so, who do we contact at PCNA to effect transmission changes? My dealer tells me that my order has been accepted by the factory; however, I would like shorter gears as the "standard" gearing would be too tall for most, if not all, race tracks in North America.

    Peter,

    I don't know of any way to do this as part of the order or build process. What you can do is have the 2003 GT3 Cup gears installed after you take delivery. I believe the stock Cup car gears are set up for a top speed of 145 mph or so and should be good for most tracks except the rovals like Daytona.

    The 03 Cup gears should be available through PMNA now.

    From the UK Porsche site:

    For competition use, all gear ratios from second to sixth can be easily replaced in order to prepare the car for individual circuit characteristics.

    Here are the top speeds in each gear using the latest gearing info from the Porsche Motorsports (assuming Cup car maximum RPM is the same as the GT3):

    2nd GT3: 46, 81, 112, 144, 170, 190 mph
    Cup car: 48, 75, 96, 114, 134, 161 mph

    On the open track, one possible problem with such a switch would be the increased risk of brake overheating.

    If you use lower gears on the GT3, does this mean that the speedo and odometer will be wildly inaccurate (like on many cars) or is the speedo sensor located elsewhere (not on the tranny)?

    Would be nice not to rack up 10k miles on the odometer after 6k miles driven. The Porsche odometers already read 5% on the high side as it is...

    Speedo Gets Its Signal From....

    The speedo (instrument cluster computer) in the Carerras gets it's info from the ABS wheel speed sensors, so, changing gear ratios in the gearbox should not affect the readings.
