    PASM doubt

    Gents,
I've been wondering something about PASM for a while.
First time I read about it was through RC's post, great device, basically
similar in principle to Ferrari/ Maserati's Skyhook or Merc ABC suspension.
You leave it in normal for, well, normal use and select sport when you want
to have serious fun. Ok Great!
But I read on several occasion recently that the Porsche PASM actually
switches automatically for you to sport mode when it detect that you are
    driving in a sporty manner!!!
Ok, fist of all, it is quite arrogant for a computer to pretend that it can
detect your feeling, but more seriously, is that true?
Well, in that case, why have a sport button? And on what grounds exactly
does the PASM know when to switch to sport mode.
I have a mixed feeling about this. It's a bit like PSM when it came out,
great device, but when you switch it off, it comes back on automatically
    when you press the brakes.
Here, it's a bit different, but basically, you wanna stay in normal, but
the computer will switch to sport automatically!
From what I've read on PASM, the difference between normal and sport
setting is quite big, so 997 owners, do you feel an unwanted suspension
difference in the way the car reacts sometimes?
Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post,
    Fanch.

    Re: PASM doubt

pasm is a great device inho, and it never changed to sport mode alone.

maybe i've never driven it hard enough...

    Re: PASM doubt

AFAIK the PASM stays in the mode you selected, it won't go into sport mode by itself, unless you activate the sport chrono which automatically selects sport mode for you but you can still manually override to normal mode.

My guess is that they are reffering to the capacity of the PASM to adapt dampning stiffness according to the dinamic needs of the car, road surface, etc. but that is only within the stiffness parameters of each mode. I.e. shocks can get stiffer and softer within Normal Mode but will not on average get to Sport Mode stiffness, and viceversa, than can only be done by selecting the proper mode. If you are in normal mode, you will stay on normal mode but within that normal mode the stiffness can vary somewhat according to the cars needs.

    Re: PASM doubt

    fanch,

You're destined to get a GT3 and you need to come to terms to accept it .

Sport mode is too hard for city driving but PERFECT for

country roads or track. Normal mode is really nice. Still feels very sporty but takes out the PAIN of big bumps and crappy city roads.....

I love it. I had the 030 SPORTS SUSPNESION on my 2000 996 and it was wearing on me in city driving. Having the option of which one I want is GREAT !! And no it's never switched modes on me.... not sure it does that...

Re: Sport mode is too hard for city driving but PERFECT for

    Thanks for the response everyone,
So it's not as I feared, the car will NOT switch to sport mode automatically.
    Good stuff!
    Ron, GT3?
    Maybe, just maybe

Re: Sport mode is too hard for city driving but PERFECT for

Unless you get a "PASM failure", when it seems to drift into sport mode by itself!

Still, stopping, and turning the ignition off and on does seem to fix it. Maybe they're running Windows behind the scenes

Merc..s ABC suspension isn't absolutely similar,it's based on pneumatic spring effect, and this suspension system (ABC)dont have anti-sway bar.

Not quite as simple as that

SPASM has a number of "maps" to control the damper stiffness, based on how the car is being driven. In normal mode this can range from soft to hard depending on how you're driving and will change automatically. The same also applies in sport mode where there are another set of "maps" that range from stiff to almost rock solid. And again they change automatically.

Go to the Porsche website and it's all explained there.

Agree with you 100%. I really like the option of switching modes based on the conditions.

Re: Sport mode is too hard for city driving but PERFECT for

    pfffttt, all this electronic gimmickery.

what happened to pure hardcore sports car, back to the basics...

    oh yeah...

    True to the heart

    Re: PASM doubt

In certain driving situations, PASM changes to sport mode if it "senses" that you're driving "too" sporty for the comfort setting. It is some sort of safety feature. Also if PASM malfunctions, it automatically sets itself into sport mode.
It does NOT change from sport mode to comfort mode automatically.

Thanks RC, I thought I read right then.
See, that's weird, it's a safety feature, but safety from what? I don't get it.
And once it goes automatically into sports, if the driver goes back to "cool" driving, does the PASM go back to normal setting?

    PASM from Porsche Website

"The system responds to changing road conditions and/or driving styles by applying a variable damping force within the defined range for the selected mode (Normal" or "Sport")."

" If "Sport" mode is selected, the suspension is set to a harder damper rate. If the quality of the road surface drops below a certain threshold, the system immediately changes to a softer rating within the "Sport" setup band and thus restores the car's grip and traction. When the road surface improves, PASM returns to the original, harder setting.

If "Normal" mode is selected, and the car is driven assertively, PASM automatically switches to a harder rating within the "Normal" setup band. As the dampers become stiffer, the car becomes more stable and responds more quickly to driver inputs.

In either case, the result is a car which can adapt the way it handles and rides to the driver's driving style."

    Re: PASM doubt

    PASM is great.

Smoth cruising when in normal mode and bone crushing when in sport.

-20 mm you are only stuck with one setting that is too harsh for normal road driving. surely it lowers center of gravity and allows more feedback through suspension.

get a 997 with pasm and a gt3 for weekend racing and track use

    Re: PASM doubt

20m dropped suspension is no way too hard for normal road driving.
