    997s RECALL - Crank case machined 1mm too thin?

    I took my car in FINALLY to have the airbag light fixed and reset and was told there is a recall on my 997S. Basically he said part of the crank case may have been machined 1mm too thin at one end and they have to pull the transmission and check it. If it is the wrong measurment then they have to install some kind of a spacer.

    I'm not a transmission expert, so I maybe someone else can look up the details and post them. Did not sound TOO serious, but I don't like the idea of pulling the transmission out. Just never good.

    Anyone else have this issue and have it fixed yet?

    Airbag issue he said should just take a few hours to change out a connector...

    I'll keep you posted.

    Depends on your production date i believe...my dealer said mine was fine...11/04 build date!

    Airbag light? My god... are they still having problems with this. My 99' 996 had this problem... 4 visits later they finally fixed it.

    Is there a way to tell when driving if car is a problem?

    They did not give me a recall # or tell me my prod. date

    What I don't get is it seems like they have to check anyway - so why check the production date... ??? I did not feel anything while driving. Car felt great....

    Are they talking thrust washers on the crankshaft? If so, there will be no need to worry whatsoever once it is properly repaired. Small consolation, I know, after you realize they have to pull the engine. I'd make sure I brought it to the MOST EXPERIENCED Porsche service. Not all dealerships are the same in this regard.

    Rear Main Seal, due to overly loose tolerences on some m96/m97 engines. Usually just a mild oil leak, dealer typically replaces the seal up to three times, after that may replace the motor with a rebuilt unit if excessively out of tolerence. Occurs in 3-25% of 996/997/boxster engines. Very rare on gt1 style engines(GT2,GT3,TT), due to different block with 'tighter' tolerences. This has been a bone of contention for years with pcar owners and porsche.
