grant you can't be serious, the 1 series is a clownshoe hatchback hothatch...
It's the same thing as the Cayman/911 situation. A Cayman GT3 that's midengined and lighter than a 911 version would be optimal, but Porsche would never do it. They'd [censored] off some 911 owners and the hardcore bunch (like me) would still buy a GT3 (I'm crossing my fingers that by 2006 I can swing a 997).
I have a 2815 pound 325is. It's much smaller than an e90, but I've had 5 people in it. It's decently comfortable with 4, but what do I care, I'm the driver and most of the miles are with me commuting alone. Compared to a 911, I consider it very practical to just have 5 seats and I like the size so that I can get through traffic and into parking spots easily. If I wanted a larger car, the 5 series is available, but instead BMW has grown the 3 series. So the 1 series is now more comparable to my old 3 series in terms of weight and size. An M1 would be a wonderful car, but BMW would be careful for it not to nip at the m3's heels, even though IMHO it's the better platform simply because it's smaller.
