Ferrari: the company plans a revolution!

Montezemolo during the F2005 presentation: "What concerns me more is to give Ferrari economic autonomy and i think this will be achieved by the end of 2012.
Ferrari has some amazing and important technical partners, but a different financial structure to our competitors and so we want autonomy so that we are not dependent on FIAT, which has always given a lot to Ferrari and will continue to do so, but economic and operational autonomy is very important...
between now and 2008 a lot of things will happen. Let's wait and see."

IMO this means that we will see a lot of new things in the next few years. Perhaps Ferrari is going the same way like Porsche with totally new models. In this context we must see the design-comparison between the four schools which should bring up brand new ideas for the company.

Re: Ferrari: the company plans a revolution!

I'm a bit confused of these words... will the company and especially the models be the same beauties we have seen in the past? IMO Ferrari has lost a bit of its spirit in the last ten years although they were very successful. But success is not the same as spirit and the most spirit the cars had during the 60s, 70s and 80s (for example: 250 GTO, daytona, dino, 288 GTO, F40). Well that's still my opinion. But now i'm looking forward...

Re: Ferrari: the company plans a revolution!

IMO economic autonomy is not compatible with a small range of artificially limited production vehicles, no company survided into modern times doing that, they ALL got bought out or disapeared. In order to have enough stability to survive alone they would have to increase production of their traditional models AND expand their lineup into more mainstream high volume sectors such as entry-level sportcars or sportsedans/SUVs to give them resources and greater profitability but specially finantial stability to get through the volatile changes of the high-end sportcar market. I.e. just what Porsche had to do, and they are now the envy of the sportcar makers.
Its either that or depend on a parent company, the problem is that the parent company then decides what Ferrari does and could change its philosophy, like Audi did with Lambo, Ford with Jaguar or Aston, etc. FIAT was perfect becuase its italian and in the same vibe as Ferrari and respected Ferrari (as the institution it is in Italy) so Ferrari had freedom and did what they wanted but seems like FIAT's economy is not able to support Ferrari much longer so Ferrari needs to become independant or get sold. So when he says lots of thing will happen, if independance is their goal, then you better believe they will.

Re: Ferrari: the company plans a revolution!

As I posted elsewhere , there is no free lunch for Ferrari here once they go public and independent . Montezemolo obviously refers to the impending IPO and is softening the tifosi up for the inevitable. At that point, the investment bankers , their board reps and shareholders will tell Ferrari mgmt what they need to do to build shareholder value.
Any car enthusuiast here think THEY could sit in the chairs of the Ferrari and Porsche CEOs 5 years from now and please BOTH the financial markets ( who look at an automotive stock no different than a soap company stock ) AND the passionate keepers of the " truth " as extolled on these types of boards ?

Just curious...How did Audi change its philosophy w/ Lamborghini?

The pre-Audi Lambo's have nothing in common with todays Gallardo or Murcielago, since AUDI's takeover they have completely changed the Lamborghini cars and IMO for the better in this case. For example, the Gallardo's V10 N/A engine designed by AUDI and its Audi alum space frame chasis (even built in germany) are a significant improvement over the pre-Audi era thanks to Audi. They are more reliable, more technologically advanced, better built, more user friendly, safer and better handling, etc.

OK. I thought you meant that there had been a change while under the Audi umbrella which I wasn't aware of.

Re: Ferrari: the company plans a revolution!

When Ferrari resigned the F1 concorde agreement how much of a signing bonus did they receive? How much of a loss would they have had for the year had they not resigned with FOM? (was it really close to the 40M Euro that JT had mentioned previously?) And would that have had a major effect on their upcoming IPO?

Re: Ferrari: the company plans a revolution!

It is a scary topic for Ferrari owners and I think a big risk. The Ferrari brand has always been exclusive (more so than Porsche). If more main stream cars are made it will be a huge risk at the expense of the brand. A lot of Ferrari owners by a Ferrari for this reason.

Looks like Ferrari may have jumped the gun. BMW, Renault and Mercedes are all moving forward with the GPWC and are even challenging Ecclestone for his tradmarks on "Formula 1" and "F1". Ferrari may be racing against the likes of Minardi, Toyota, etc. in only a few years. With the German & French mfg's interested in having more control over the televising of the races (and obviously the money involved), it will be interesting how they schedule their races vs. the current F1 series. Sounds like the IRL vs. CART debacle shaping up.

Given that Ferrari currently dominates F1 against mfg's who have $$$ to try to beat them, how boring will F1 be when Ferrari is racing against teams with 1/10th their budget?
