Re: The moment I've been waiting for...

I can imagine it must have been very frightening Christian!
Luckily it was when flying a helicopter, not something you encounter every day!
GG, Yeah, it was pretty intense, but luckily there was never a moment of panic. Helicopters have my interest, so actually my biggest annoyance was that the stretcher was so low in the helicopter that I couldn't look out the windows...
As a pilot, you can look at it from the other side as well: whenever you arrive somewhere, it is because people really need you and your unique skills; you really make a difference. But like you said; I can imagine it must be difficult to run into so much dispair.

This editor sucks but it appears to be the safest and fastest solution so far for our forum software.

Sometimes I can upload photos from my iPhone or iPad without any issues and sometimes they show up in the wrong angle. Smiley

    Cooling off over the ocean...

Flying relentlessly towards 11,500 flight hours! It is super hot here currently, with surface temperatures exceeding 40C plus in many parts of the South Land-- temperatures normally reserved for Palm Springs or Death Valley at this time of the year. laugh

BjoernB, do you know if your pilot had to file an instrument flight plan for your particular flight or was the weather good enough for your trip?

I just spent two days in LA and based on Pilots awesome recommendation I had a great time visiting the Griffith Observatory, so I'm posting a few pics as a thank you to the man himself . Thanks again Pilot !

Food in L.A. is excellent... kiss

Not a fan of the traffic there though...

Griffith Observatory is an amazing tourist spot, we weren't as lucky as you were, weather was foggy (smoggy? ) and we could barely see L.A. downtown. Loved the souvenir shop though, couldn't get the kids out of it.

Those are excellent photos, Enmanuel! Sorry we couldn't meet up while you were in town. I am really glad you enjoyed Griffith. It's great that you were so lucky with the weather-- a perfect day to be there kiss And as always your food shots made me hungry-- it all looks really good. Where did you go to eat?

Yeah it was way too short notice , sorry about that.

Indeed the weather was excellent for the views of LA, hot though, my watch was showing 94 degrees up there.

Brunch was at a place called Square One Dinning in East Hollywood, the baked eggs and chorizo dish was really good. And for dinner took advantage of restaurant week and went to a restaurant thats in the Sheraton hotel in downtown LA called District. They had a 4 course menu for a very very fair price and everything was delicious. I'll definitely go back there, highly recommend.

… with a photo taken fresh this morning with my 6S ;-)

My first flight in a B2 Ecureuil helicopter took place near St. Moritz, Switzerland on a June day with perfect flying weather. Little did I know that this one flight would change my life forever and lead to a career that now spans several decades. All I had at the time was a crazy dream and my beautiful wife :)

Over the years flying has become a love affair, one that I will continue as long as I possibly can! Now it is time to take out the RS...

Smiley Great photo and congratulations... Smiley

Well...me and helicopters, we are no friends. I prefer planes. Always wanted to make my pilot's license but my wife is very opposed and the truth is, I couldn't actually afford a plane (even a small one), so why bother? Still, everything with an engine fascinates me and yes, even helicopters. Smiley

Right now I am fighting with myself not to get a motorcycle. Rode a Yamaha YZF-R1 last Sunday for a few kms, had to be careful because I haven't been on such a motorcycle for decades(!) but loved it, even if it scared the sh.t out of me. I doubt I would get a bike this powerful but maybe some sort of naked bike or something... Naahhh, I promised my wife and if I get a motorcycle, my son would want one too soon, so no. A plane? Well, still need to win the lottery and then I would make a jet license and get myself something like the Cessna Citation Mustang, nothing fancy. Smiley Smiley

A good friend here in Munich spends nearly all of his leisure time in the air (Cesna). He is a member of a private plane club near Munich and they share two airplans. I was quiet surprised how cheap this hobby is. Costs are similar to Golf.

It is still too much for me, one of our family friends immigrated to Canada, so he can enjoy his hobby...flying. Much cheaper over there. No kidding.

Maybe a simple Cessna with a prop is the right thing to start a career as a pilot. And you have much more airports which are accessible. And one hour in the air is cheaper than a taxi ride from Munich to the Airport

Re: The moment I've been waiting for...

I do not like small, piston-powered aircraft. If I fly, I want to do it right.

The pilot license alone costs over 12k EUR (incl. training, etc.) in Germany. This is for a simple private pilot license for a small piston-powered aircraft. The jet license adds substantial cost...

One hour in the air is around 150 EUR as far as I heard...without fuel. Not exactly cheap but acceptable.

In Canada, it is my understanding that it is much cheaper, around 100 EUR or so. Also maintenance is cheaper, this is why that family friend immigrated (I know, crazy).

Re: The moment I've been waiting for...

Friend lived in the US. He did the training in the US. I don't know if he uses a US license or if it is a international license (missing knowhow). He once told me to spend my summer holiday in the US, do the training and receive a license because that is much cheaper than to do all the training here. (Didn't do the 9/11 killers it that way?)

He is paying a 2-digit amount per hour

US license is around 6000 USD...I think. Not sure however how many flight hours your friend needed and how many landings are a mandatory requirement for the US license or whatever license he got.

I cannot afford (time-wise) to spend my time in the US, making my pilot's license. Smiley

2-digit amount per flight hour? Are you sure he isn't lying to you?! Smiley

Re: The moment I've been waiting for...

Many years ago I was looking to do my helicopter license . I did one hour to try. Costs in Switzerland were 75k for the private license and 120k for the professional .

And then it cost per flying hour in the helicopter are 1k !!!

I had , at the time, also looked into doing it in the US . Much cheaper and faster . The license could partially be converted to a Swiss one, but I would of had to do more more exams to fully convert it ( I can't remember exactly which ones, think it was Radio + night + maybe mountains ?? )
