watt:Sun Ra ans So, Woody keep the ball rolling but everyone misses Sky.
Sun Ra spending her day and tonight at the vet after attacking a 2' rattlesnake this morning's hike at the upper crossing. She lost, getting bitten on the mouth and breathing almost shut down 1/2 hour after we got her in - but she's fine.
Good to hear, what a horrible situation... Must be a traumatic experience for her.

apias:Wow, thank god. Do they keep anti-venom at the vet, or was he able to revive her by other means?
We give the active dogs [off trail youngers] antivenom vaccines twice a year, which really limits the damage. She was the first bit in the face which is more dangerous as near the brain, the only bite type that might be lethal with Pacific Rattlers, but we had her in in an hour and a half from bite. The vet then added antivenom, fluids and antitbiotics and she came home this morning. I was wrong about her breathing being choked, vet said it was never an issue.
Whether she learned is another matter, as she was going back to the coiled rattler as I arrived having been bitten already! Not as snake smart as Sun who got nipped once on his hard front foot pad [no tooth penetration - just too hard], and got the message for the rest of his life. Since she spends her life off trail in the chaparral it's gonna happen again.
Sky got bit twice on the rear leg at age 2, and spent the night in the canyon in shock with his loyal brother Storm never leaving his side. Sun and I found them the morning and got them home a 1/2 mile, with Sky, with his huge swollen leg, joining a coyote chase with the others for a 100 yards before I caught him, so not bad on large dogs. Spike Jr came home after a few nights out with a huge hambone size rear leg dragging behind with the tell tale black necrosis spot of a bite, he was fine after a few days. And Surf was bit in the leg once and same treatment as Sun Ra resolved it.
Everyone else learned but Sun Ra is a pushy alpha bitch and we shall see
Quite the hazardous environment there. Amazing that they were all bitten and survived with no aftereffects, well, except Storm, who was either more cautious than the others or more nimble. Sounds like you are able to keep a cool head about it, which is good, panic never helped anyone.
Sun on the steps. His foot tooth-slash doesn't really count as a bite, just luck though
Sandy was never bitten in 13.5 years, nor Star in her short 15 month life. Storm was slower due to his arthritis, etc., but he had plenty of close calls where Daddy stopped him before he got too close In contrast, Sky and Sun would see a Rattler blocking the trail, stop and look back at Daddy and say "get rid of this guy". A flick of the ski pole or a stick and the way is clear.
It's still a hot flash to go into the chicken coop and find a 6 footer just hanging out - killing the squirrels and getting some water. No "condition White" around here!!!
4trac:Wow - close call indeed. Another big advantage to New Zealand (for those that may not know... it has never had snakes).
Well...not quite true I'm afraid...
You find them on the beaches only though...or in the cold water (thanks god I would never take a bath in such cold water ).
Hawaii has no snakes though, no natives at least.

OK, I should have said "terrestrial snakes". The ocean is a big place with no boundaries, so all bets are always off as to what you can find in the sea.

4trac:and btw now that family is safe and sound.... how is the new SVR treating you?
Sun was ready to place an order for a 2017 svr in nz, so he rented one in LA for the run north. Just to be sure. it was cheap revelation just as renting a 458 spider had been.
the svr is quick, but the exhaust sounds like a harley - puerile and stupid loud even before you push the sport exhaust button and totally embarassing if you do. The seats mimicked porsche buckets but were quite uncomfortable and showed lots of wear at limited miles. And driving a sport revealed a prior life conclusion: Sun is not a RR guy, even though they are truly the most all around 4wd. On to other things.
He's ordering a new raptor for usa laughs, and may just hang with the yeep which has proved itself superb off road, at least for this winter (july-august).
Watt, I was surprised you were driving one. My impression based on your comments you wouldn't be caught dead in one. Not surprised you opted not to buy one.
FWIW, I drove a BMW X5 for four days while may RRS was being repaired. I couldn't wait to turn it in. What a piece of crap compared the the RRS.

Really there is only one terrifying predator in NZ: the sandfly. Tiny but rips you to bits and if they get infected just miserable. We coat ourselves in 50/50 mix of Dettol and baby oil which allows no shirt and shorts
