    Resurecting the Ferrari F40

Just posted a new blog on Resurrecting the Ferrari F40:

    https://karenable.com/resurrection-of-the-ferrari-f40/

    Comments?

Anyone else undertake any major engine rebuilds lately?

    Re: Resurecting the Ferrari F40

An authorized Ferrari dealer using the wrong engine oil   let alone in an F40 mail

A google review wouldn't hurt and could save others from being ripped off

Worst part is I told them upfront which oil to use and it was clearly indicated on the prior service history which I provided as background.

    Re: Resurecting the Ferrari F40

So the F40 much prefer thicker 60 weight oil over the lighter 40 weight.

The engine must be running hot enough that the 40 weight just can't cope with.

Is been running 10W/60 for over a decade.

    Re: Resurecting the Ferrari F40

Another very interesting story. Thanks for sharing.

Unfortunately it also confirms my feeling that perhaps I can afford to buy certain cars, but the maintenance yes

    Re: Resurecting the Ferrari F40

Presumably the job was fully compensated by Boardwalk? Perhaps not your time\stress but at least the remedial work?

Not at all, Boardwalk took zero responsibility and their basically attitude was we could care less.  On the list of supremely arrogant Ferrari dealerships, Boardwalk ranks #1.

    That's astonishing!!

What was the total cost of this work? In the receipt/service records you got from Boardwalk does it state which type of oil they used?

Original bill from Boardwalk was around $5k.  Rebuild was then a bit over 12x that.

    Smiley

Are you not making a case of it for that amount? Even for the principle..

    Re: Resurecting the Ferrari F40

Don't have record handy, but what is the oil specified by Ferrari initially? The mechanic could have went by the book instead of previous records stating otherwise.

If the engine was rebuilt before and the rebuild tech specified a different weight oil, then there could be where the confusion lies.

The difference between 40 weight and 60 weight when hot is quite significant, the heavier 60 will be able to maintain a film while the 40 could already broken down and sheared off.

More worrying is the missing and dropped bolt, could have done a lot of damage.

Boardwalk was told to use 10W/60 and they were given the historical maintenance invoices showing that oil being used.

But does the Ferrari's own service book says 10W-60? Cause some mechanics perhaps either are dumb, clueless, or just don't care and just do what the book says. Doesn't matter what the customer wants/says, or whatever comments was entered into the system by the service advisor.

    Re: Resurecting the Ferrari F40

Im not sure and also dont know what updates Ferrari would have issued over the years.  However they were very clearly told 10W/60 and given past maintenance history to back it up.  I think what's clear is they did a very poor sloppy job with little attention to detail.

    Re: Resurecting the Ferrari F40

    Most definitely.

Apparently this is all very much based on the Boardwalk dealership management's attitude and approach to customers.

    Re: Resurecting the Ferrari F40

that is a ridiculous maintenance job on any car, let alone on such a car.
