    New tires -- 360 Modena

I'm on my third set of brakes and need to install a third set of tires at 10,000 miles. I'm not complaining, I've been on the track quite a bit.

Anyway, I want to install Michelin Pilot Sport Cups, but they only come in larger sizes.

    The car comes with:

215/45ZR18 in front with 7.5" rims.
275/40ZR18 in the rear with 10" rims.

The Pilot Sport Cups come in:

    225/40ZR18 requiring a 7.5-9" rim,
    285/30ZR18 requiring a 9.5-10.5" rim or
    295/30ZR18 requiring a 10-11" rim.

These tires are not as tall, but certainly are wider. Will they fit?

Re: New tires -- 360 Modena

I know people who are using the Challenge rims (0.5" wider front and rear) with 225/40 and 295/30 tires with no problems.

Re: New tires -- 360 Modena

The Pilot Sport Cups definitely come in your exact size, they are one of four o.e. tires for the 360. Personally I think the Bridgestone S-02A is a better choice, but the Michelins are certainly available if your mind is made up.

Re: New tires -- 360 Modena

Thom - sounds like those sizes (228 and 285) of Cups will fit on your rims. The lower sidewalls will act as if you have lower gearing - faster acceleration...

    Gary,

The Sport *Cups* are not OEM on the Ferrari. It is the older original Pilot Sport that was. The Cups are the R-compound street/track tires.

Re: New tires -- 360 Modena

I use the Sport Cup set up but only on track days. They are excellent track tires. However they make the car lower and much more prone to scraping, pick up every small pebble in the road, and the speedometer reads too high. Also, the fender to tire gap visually looks too big.

Re: New tires -- 360 Modena

Why not try Corsa, it has factory size and perform really good under dry condition.

My mistake. If you want to run R compound tires on the street you might consider the Toyo RA-1, available in 225/40x18 and 275/35x18. They wear much better than the PSC and are not that far back in performance, and also don't suffer from the heat cycle limitations like the PSC. They are cheaper, too.

By factory size, do you mean 215/45 and 275/40? If so, I don't see them in the Corsa chart:

    Gary,

Have you tried the RA-1's on the 360 or another car? Do you drive them on the streets as well? Just curious.

I have driven the RA1's on the street and they are much better for the street than the MPSC's! The Cups are very slippery when the weather is cold. The RA1's last about twice as long, cost less and are still pretty fast on the track. Stock, they are about 1 sec/lap slower than the Cups, but that difference evaporates if you shave them (not good for the street)...

Re: New tires -- 360 Modena

Thanks, I'm going to look into the Toyos.

Sounds good. I guess the only shortcoming is a shortage of appropriate sizes.

Re: New tires -- 360 Modena

I'm putting RA-1s on my car next week, for street and track use. I'm tired of doing the "change the wheels" dance. I have spoken with two 360 owners who love the RA-1s, one of whom drives them on the street. You've got to have a certain amount of caution, but by all accounts they are much than MPSC on the street.

BTW, they are also available in larger sizes (245/40x18 and 305/35x18) that would work with the stock wheels, but I don't know of anyone who has tried them.

I don't know if I would try those sizes on the stock 7.5" and 10" wheels. Seems to me that one would at least need an 8.5" and 11" set to make these sizes effective.

Bob Woodman tire handles the Toyos, and the chart at his website (http://www.bobwoodmantires.com/toyo/toyo.html) shows recommended wheel width of 7.5 to 9.5 for the front, and 8.5 to 12 for the rear, which the stock wheels obviously fit within.

Re: New tires -- 360 Modena

Gary - It's generally preferred to have rims that are at the high end of the range rather than the minimum. It won't be unsafe if you're at the minimum, but performance can be badly compromised. You might look at slightly smaller tires if you want to use stock rims - just a thought...

I just found the Toyo dimensions sheet on their web site. The rim width recommended for each tire is show in bold in the third column.

Oh, I've ordered the smaller sizes, I was just mentioning the option of the larger ones. I don't personally think it's a big problem to go with the bigger tires, but I'm also not convinced it is all that great a benefit either.

There seems to be a little disagreement. I don't think it would be a huge mistake to get the larger tires, but I am sticking with the smaller sizes.

Radar - I think that bold number refers to which size wheel was used to make their tread width measurements and does not necessarily indicate the optimum size..

Yes, it is the measuring rim width but also the ideal width. Otherwise, why else would they pick that size instead of another?
