Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

Finally drove the MkII (4S to be exact) and... I did not like it.  Sorry to say but I find the engine diametrically opposite to what my previous 997s and 996 were like: you pushed to enjoy.
The sport exhaust is basically a normal exhaust on 997, I dare not think what the car is like without one.

Pros: the road holding and integrity, it does feel much more keyed indirection-ally and sewn from one solid piece of granite -very impressive-.  The cohesion of the interior + advanced PCM is excellent.

Cons: the engine.  Any sports car that does not scream at the top of its lungs at high revs is not a real sports car.  Any sports car that does not rev highly, whatever you believe that number should be, just does not feel right for me.  With the added absence of vibrations, you basically get a ballistic, but critically "cruise", missile.

The 991 GTS remains my favorite 2+2 seater, pity they are so expensive.

Incidentally I tried a Macan Diesel S and was pleasantly surprised, the GTS version should be quite interesting.  How is it that Porsche tries to inject sportiness in cars that are patently not and take this away in the 1 car that should!

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

Because that's what sells at a higher price and that's what people want. I am convinced the real sport cars at Porsche is moving to the GT line where we will have many more declinations coming (convertible and such).

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

Would it be correct to assume that a 991.1 with powerkit, PCCB and the normal works is the same as a 991.1 GTS? Is there really any difference. I've been searching for a used GTS for a while but  they seem to be quite rare in the UK, is the 991.1 with powerkit a closer or exact option Smiley

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

For all practical purposes. Yes. The only thing that would be missing is the PSE.

Some external cosmetic changes: sports mirror, the black grill in the back cover..

Major difference is the in the internal appearance package: Alcantara seats, deviated stiching and the red instrument cluster.

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

I would agree, dinamically I would think it would be similar to a late 991.1 Carrera with those extras. The differences would be more aesthetically (wheels, black grill, black washers, black exhaust tips, extra rear grill, widebody in case of RWD, sportdesign bits, and interior GTS package), but dinamically would be similar. The powerkit especifically is exactly the same, not sure about the steering programing for example, but how different can it be though... the PSE programing may be a bit more agrresive on the GTS but again, we are splitting hairs in the overall picture IMO. Definitely a good option if they are asking too much for GTS right now or can't find any.

My targa is scheduled to arrive in San Diego about 3 weeks early. I should have it by the end of the month.

In deciding to buy a Targa, I wanted a different looking 911 something that is unique in styling from the run of the mill 911. I agree that it is a touring car and even with sport exhaust it doesn't generate the excitement of a Porsche GT car. I have owned two Porsche cabs one turbo and the other S model and the problem I had with the cab is the bulbous back deck.   It looks like a Beatle. Also, I didn't like the wind screen set up. The Targa is the best looking 911 which combines a retro look with modern styling. I plan to keep it a year or two and get GT model IF they interest me.otherewise I will look at another manufacturer like a McLaren.kiss

While I'm a coupe man myself I gotta say that the Targa looks great in the flesh, they really nailed it on the 991, very elegant  and classy with a touch of uniqueness and retro kiss

Are you serious? The 991 Cab has a wonderfully clean line, you seem to confuse the 991 Cab with the 997 Cab. Smiley

No doubt the 991 cab deck is not as pronounced as the 997. No need to defend your GTS cab. It's a much better looking cab than the 996 and 997.

Btw, I am considering the R8V10 should the next GT Porsche models don't pan out. So I am very interested on how it goes with yours. You are very honest in critiquing your cars.

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

Will have a chance to drive a new Carrera 2S at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta this week, and will post impressions, maybe a pic or two.

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

Drove a C 2S hard for a couple of hours yesterday at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, Georgia. I was very surprised at the power delivery--very strong with no turbo lag that I could discern. This car is much faster than my 997 2S of a couple of years back. Rock  solid in the corners and easy to maneuver when the rear kicks around with the traction control turned off..  Made several runs using launch control and was amazed at the acceleration, torque and braking (non ceramics). The only thing that I found wanting was the interior, which seems dated to me.  Otherwise the car is extremely fast, and sounds terrific with the PSE.  Personally I would not like the sound any louder. I was very impressed  with this car.. I'm

Will post tomorrow.   The glare was bad on a very hot day so pics aren't very good, but will post anyway.

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

Good to hear. Thanks for the review and comparison. I have not driven one but plan to soon. Curious how it will compare to my turbo.

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

I had a 996 turbo with an ecu chip. Though my memory is a bit fuzzy, I'm pretty confident the 2S is faster through the torque range. The PDK was instant and launch control was impressive. On my first launch, I admit to getting a bit dizzy for a moment.I was really amazed with the forceful acceleration.I would be interested in your comments after your drive.

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

Your comments on the PSE give some solace. I realize going from a GT3 to a Targa would require adjusting my expectations but I had deep concerns regarding the exhaust sound. To me an important component of the sport car experience is the exhaust sound. Nothing worst than driving a sport car that sounds wimpy.

Nick, yesterday I was on track, when a .2 C4S blast down the front straight, it is quite quiet and sounded like a vacuum cleaner angry

Inside the car it sounded ok though.

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

Nick, not disagreeing but the several .2 C4s i heard from a overlook at the Experience Center in Atlanta sounded very throaty and strong.  Was the car you heard equipped with PSE?

Here are a few pics from Atlanta.  The track, an original 1967 R, a Miami Targa, a Tiffany Blue Turbo S Cab (specially ordered by the owner to match Tiffany gift boxes), the overlook, and a Maritime Blue (paint to order) 718.

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

Yes, it has the sports exhaust option.

The Shelby GT500 sounds just about the best on the front straight, just behind the GT3RS.

    You mean Maritime Blue 981?
    --

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

Don't know if the number 981 is in the description, but the options card on the windshield said maritime blue. Also the experience center guide described the color as maritime blue. Quite attractive I thought, and I believe it was available some years ago.

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

Yep, a favorite color of mine. It was available in the mid 90's on some special edition 968 models (968 CS). Looks accurate. Here a link to a listing for one:

Nick, I still believe the new 991.2 Carrera with PSE sounds very OK for a turbo charged car and I am always surprised that people seem to have a different opinion. Smiley It doesn't sound even close to the 991 Turbo S (which really sounds like a vacuum cleaner...) and it sounds much better than the new 718 with PSE. Don't expect GT3 or GTS exhaust sound but for a turbo charged car, Porsche did a pretty good job in my opinion. I wish the Turbo S would sound that way.

Smiley True but while my GTS sounds pretty close to the GT3 RS (I'm not kidding Smiley), I still prefer the V10 sound of my R8. This sound is pure aural sex, I cannot imagine something nicer. Smiley

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

    Hi all, first post

Just ordered a Targa 4 sapphire blue with graphite/chalk interior with classic carrera 20" wheels. I've taken it with the PDK and that's about all as too easy to get carried away!

Still have my Aston Vantage 4.7 for now but starting to use it regularly and its not easy to live with. More of an event than the Porsche and the noise is very nice but my last Vantage was a 4.3 and the noise was outrageous but had no power low down. Not sure about the American V8 but sold my Jensen Interceptor two years ago which had that lovely Chrylser V8 in it.

    Last Porsche was a 911 2.4 T in 1988, I paid £1200 and sold it for £12,000 in 1990!

Its interesting to hear all the comments about performance and handling but personally I have found most people cant actually drive anyway, and how fast can we go on the road?

Interested to here views on how fast you guys actually drive on the road?

ps just move my post if its in the wrong place.

Did 306 km/h last Sunday outside Rostock with my GT3Smiley Was down in Leipzig for some laps and on the way back Sunday night there was very light traffic. Not so relaxing to drive over 280-290 in my opinion, but put the car at 240-250 (as we did)and it is a very nice ride. Average speed Leipzig- Rostock 157 km/hkiss
