    Air compressor pump not working

Had a flat tire last night on the 997S, roofing nail in the middle of the tread. Went down overnight in the garage so this morning tried to use the compressor that comes with the car to inflate the tire and see if it would hold so I could drive to the dealer and not have to use the foam filler or for that matter porsche assistance.

Unfortunately, the compressor pump worked for about a minute then stopped. I tried a different power outlet (tried the passenger well first then the one in the glove box next to the handbrake) but it still didnt work. So I plugged it into the wifes car to see if was working - it worked fine, so I inflated the tire and got the car to the dealer 4 miles away for the fix which went without a hitch.

The dealer tested the compressor and my power outlets in the car and said all worked fine, but it definately didnt work for me this morning. Anyone have any problems like this? Im worried about getting stranded with a flat in future and the compressor wont work because this fault reoccurs.

Re: Air compressor pump not working

Just use P assistance rather then messing with it yourself. It's a much safer option for a lot of reasons

Re: Air compressor pump not working

Have used on previous Porsche's, but its a lot of waiting around and when my dealer is 4mls away today was the easy option for me. Im more concerned about the power outlets not working.

Re: Air compressor pump not working

    You used the wrong outlet!!
It is reccomended to use the Cigarette Lighter Outlet ONLY for the tire filling compressor!
    You blew a fuse

"Just" use P assist? It's not very convenient most of the time I bet. Plus it is probably some guy who doesn't know Porsche from Chevy cavalier and treats them all the same. He'll slid under the car with a hook in his hand and make a quick decision on where to grab the suspension and then start pulling, something awful like that.

A Porsche owner should at least learn the proper way to get the car onto the flat bed truck so he can tell the guy how to do it properly.

Also, when P assist is contacted make sureyou call the towing company yourself to make sure they send a flatbed. It's not guarenteed you'll get a flat bed truck. You'll get any truck closest to your incident.

P assist should be considered a last resort, IMHO. Get a jack and wrench and a do it yourself tire plug set and fix the puncture yourself for temporary service getting yourself out of a jam. The can of goo is to be avoided, driving on a tire with a nail in it can futher damage the tire. It's ridiculous anyway. Did you know Porsche EXPECTS you will discard ANY tire with a puncture?

Re: Air compressor pump not working

Sorry, but my experience was excellent. They were here in about 20 mins with flat bed. They guy was extremely knowledgeable on how to properly handle P's. If I lived in or was in the sticks it might be a different story but I'd call them again in a heart beat. Here in LA area you don't want to be fiddling with flats as you can easily get hit or have someone hold you up. P assist is a no brainer IMO.

Re: Air compressor pump not working

Its all sorted now, but unfortunately when the dealer extended the courtesy of having the car detailed after they had repaired the puncture. When I got to see the car in the light (it was dark when I picked it up), there were lots of those nasty circular scratches which on a black car look terrible. There were also some nasty surface scratches which really stodd out - clearly some [censored] with a rag drying it off. I felt physically sick when I saw these marks all over the place.

Its only a week old and I was planning on detailing it myself (had bought all the right products, P21S etc etc) because having had a number of black Porsches I know how much it takes to keep it just so - its not a garage queen so its going to collect a few chips and the odd scratch but I at least want to be the one applying them!

Went back to the dealer today and whilst they accepted full accountability. They want the car for a day to get the marks out using a clay - I dont have much choice but to see what success they have. Will keep everyone posted.

Is clay the right material for swirls? Here is what www.carcareonline.com has to say about swirls.

"If the paint does not have any imperfections, then a polish should be enough. As a rule, if you have swirls or light scratches, then use a glaze. If you don't then use a polish.

The first step to your cleaning/waxing regimen is to wash your car with a quality car wash and dry thoroughly. The benefits of a clean surface cannot be over emphasized, unless you are a fan of swirl marks and feel that hairline scratches are attractive, wash thoroughly before starting."

    FYI,
    Phil

Re: Air compressor pump not working

Clay will not remove swirls. Clay "cleans" the paint removing surface contaminations. Try putting your hand in a plastic baggy and running the baggy over the paint. If you feel bumps and particles, the paint needs to be clayed for best results. After claying, the paint will be as smooth as a baby's bottom.

Only a polish with some abrasives will remove surface swirls. I recommend Einszett Metallic (if minor) or Paint Polish (more severe scratches) or the Menzerna polishes with a Porter Cable orbital polisher. You will then need to wax your car.

NO CLAY BAR!!!!! NOT for swirls!!!

Take the car to a detailing shop and let them try to fix it; have them charge those people at the dealership. Claying the car is not too smart since it shoudl be done only a few times in the car's life. They don't know what they are talking about. See carcareonline.com for explanations of clay bar.

There are some swirl-hiding compounds you can use.

What a joke! It seems to be true, Porsche dealerships are staffed with a large percentage of [expletives]
