Question for US readers....(and RC who knows all)

Why do US spec Porsches have those unsightly rear bumper extensions?

Re: Question for US readers....(and RC who knows all)

Easy: Insurance companies getting their needs met by government enacting laws.

Re: Question for US readers....(and RC who knows all)

Sorry I don't understand - I've not seen other manufacturers have to fit these types of contraptions. What is this Porschophbic legislation?

Re: Question for US readers....(and RC who knows all)

Those bumperettes are not visually wrong and they can catch a parallel parking nudge protecting the far more expensive rear bumper cover. They are now body-color painted, but I do prefer them in black. Nothing wrong with them - form follows function. These cars are sports machines, not Cartier jewels.

That's what the dealer told me. The damage to the bumpers and rear ends is somewhat reduced by those bumperettes.

Not sure about other cars. Maybe there's no expensive exhaust and engine systems back there, so they don't care if only the bumber gets scratched?

Same "logic" as the amber side lights? Everybody "knows" amber is uglier and prevents more accidents than clear.

Re: Question for US readers....(and RC who knows all)

Have you seen the back end of an F430? Tell me that a hit there will not be costly - carbon fibre everywhere along with exhaust systems etc.

I don't get it. Personally I think they ruin the back of every Porsche sold in the US and I don't understand why they're there but as they say, that's just my opinion.

And ADias - I agree form follows function which is exactly why these "bumperettes" are superfluous - they have no function whatsoever in relation to a SPORTS car. If you had a shopping car for trips to the mall - perfect "bumperettes" all round would be my ideal. They add weight and ruin the line penned by the designer.

    Each to his own...

Re: Question for US readers....(and RC who knows all)

I'm curious does anyone know how to take them off on the 997? Doesn't appear like you can reach up underneath like before.

Other then a little protection they also fill in the space difference between Euro plates and US size plates.

FUNCTION: Avoid bumper crash damage --> FORM: Bumperette cushions crash

    Get it? FORM follows FUNCTION.

    To "each his own" indeed.

Re: Question for US readers....(and RC who knows all)

from what i understand that USA cars have to have bumpers, the 997 from the factory isnt bumper legal in the USA so porsche puts those bumperettes on to make it legal, just like emissions and etc, i dont how much safer this makes it but hey oh well

didnt the early Lambo's have this problem so then they had to install those HIDEOUS USA bumpers on the contaches...

Re: Question for US readers....(and RC who knows all)

Mercedes used to have to add horrible over-bumpers to the old 70's/80's model SLs as well.

Re: Question for US readers....(and RC who knows all)

They are there to comply with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration standard that establishes requirements for the impact resistance of vehicles in low speed front and rear collisions. The purpose of this standard is to reduce physical damage to the front and rear ends of a passenger motor vehicle from low speed collisions.

Re: Question for US readers....(and RC who knows all)

it is to meet the 5mph impact law in the USA.

Is it still 5 mph or did they reduce it to 2.5 mph?

Re: Question for US readers....(and RC who knows all)

It's been reduced to 2.5 mph a while ago.
