Dreamcar is back in a Porsche!!
After a few weeks of being without a Porsche sports car last Thursday we collected our latest, a 991/2 Carrera T!
Due to the nationwide lockdown car dealerships are only open for servicing and “click and collect” car sales. Not allowed in the showrooms under any circumstances, no coffee not even permitted “comfort breaks”! So a very cold and brief handover on the dealership forecourt, just two cars on the day, ourselves and a customer collecting a brand new crayon 992 Turbo S. Normally to celebrate a new car we’d go for a good drive and a nice restaurant for a meal, current restrictions meant simply a drive home . So brief first impressions on the 40 mile solo drive home (SWMBO providing taxi service down in our Golf) amazed, for what is supposed to be a stripped out lightweight model with minimum sound proofing how refined it is, even road noise not excessive - and the motorway home has sections of rough concrete surface, definitely quieter than our much loved 981 Boxster GTS, lovely engine growl, that typical 911 sound, undetectable turbo lag - a magnificent engine and I’m not normally enthusiastic about turbo engines. Even though the “T” has the base 370bhp Carrera engine the car has all the performance and more for driving in UK’s somewhat crowded and speed limited roads. Ride quality also excellent, one aspect that did concern me with SWMBO’s hip and back issues, she really suffered in the Boxster, hence the change, a concern as the T has - 20mm PASM Sport suspension - ride firm but comfortable, more compliant and less jarring than the normal PASM set up in the Boxster. Seat comfort in the 18 way adaptive sport seat plus superb, Porsche really do make exceptionally comfortable seats, The Boss finds very few car seats to her liking. Maybe the Sport Tex is a bit softer than leather? Certainly it felt fine on the poorly maintained roads where we live.
Our car has a great spec, for us, although the comfort and luxury options fitted for negate the weight saving measures of the T, with the somewhat gimmicky lightweight side and rear glass (from the GT2 RS so I’m told), reduced soundproofing. I like the individual touches of the fabric door pulls and great SportTex upholstery. - ours is well equipped, PDK, glass electric sunroof ( which does wonders for lightening up the cabin), LED dynamic lighting, ParkAssist front and rear with reversing camera, folding mirrors (essential for our small garage), power steering plus, interior package Carrera T with rear seats and GT silver deviated stitching, heated multi function wheel, Bose, and a few more toys I’ve yet to play with. I’m sure some T purists would not be impressed, the model seems to have quite a following with far more cars with manual transmission than PDK which is very unusual these days for a Porsche. U.K. registrations have 160 manual and 91 PDK cars.
Can’t wait for lockdown to end so we can use the car more, and even more looking forward to a potential Rennteam meet somewhere, somewhen in 2022!
