Gnil:Ozzy at 5'600 staring at the other side of the valley, trying to spot the younger labs.
While I look down to our starting place at 4'400
The other young pack checking RT at 6'000 , sitting on the precise border line between Switzerland and France . A rainbow covering innocence
Haha, The Labs are just over the ridge. Too bad the children have phone service up there.
Leaving the jump off at 7000' it's 33F, the first sign....
Breaking the ice for water might be the second sign.....
But 15 F and windy at 9500' is beginning to persuade this well insulated lounger that shorts season is almost over above 9000'
Late afternoon, sun setting, Thursday, on a track with occasional people, coming down reaching 9700,' cold, windy 'n nasty through the shade, comes a hallooo-ing voice: Search and Rescue calling for a lost woman, God Bless her. Not the altitude or weather for that to have a good outcome..... Thousands of acres to search. One's only chance is to carry a garmin
I hope myself to get time to push the button, so they can come get the dogs.

At least they are up there This was a break after a hefty climb of 1.5 hour. Will try again to get to the labs

I hope they found her. One night outside should be ok. Will they send the helicopters to search ?

It turns out Thursday it was reported - she's been missing a week now since last Monday...... As for being out a night and surviving - only with a space blanket bag. The Labs would've found her if she was within 150 yards of the trail - nothing.
Choppers, horsemen, motorcycles, hikers teams.... Some get lost on purpose, but she signed the trail book, so unlikely this time. God Bless her.

A week is a long time, too long. Not much hope then
Last time we stayed in a hut at 9'100 for the night , late September, way above tree line, only rocks around , glaciers, no snow . A lady did not show up at the hut in the evening. She managed to call the land line from her mobile saying she is lost. Then phone stoped, no more batteries. They send the chopper and some people walking, we could see them such up there with the huge lights. But they had to give up. Too dangerous at night. Next morning the chopper was back there and found her. All ok. If you hide in a cavity and stay awake, you can manage one night on temperature around freezing .

watt:Eric,
Some Limber Pines in this "protected" basin reaching 10,700'. You know you're high when there's nothing but Limbers the last 2000'
The altitude record for a pine in the Swiss alps is 8'480... after that, nothing grows anymore . Only rocks, snow, ice.
Still short season I can see

Because we have the BEST air in the world! Kidding aside, one has found most of the Swiss Alps steeper than many mountains in the Rockies. That could have an impact on growing elevation too as roots aren't able to maintain growth in the higher elevations.

After ten years on Cups, Sun has gone back to Sports. The high speed runs continue, but the focus on canyon slamming and track cornering gives way to the excellent rain capability of Sports.
Running through Iowa with Sabre in the Touring, the Cups survived a massive thunderstorm at very low speed pace. With Sports you back off, but keep running hard.
Haha,
25F -- shorts season slams shut!
But Labrador weather jacks their zip another quantum leap:
Winter brings the game and the Lions down, and the little human trail traffic goes to zero.
And lo and behold, It's Lion kill season for the Crewe!!! Pretty soon, Daddy will have to dial down their home food as their track calories sky rocket.
