    Automatic door locking

    Hi,

I would be pleased to know if 997s owners have the "automatic locked
doors" system activated on their cars. I don't have it, set up on mine and
guess that the dealer could do it provided a tech2 or equivalent.
    a) Could you please tell me if your car is set up with the system from the
    factory please?

    b) What option does your central locking system handle please ?
[1: doors are automatically closed when ignition on.
    2: doors lock when speed >5 km/h
3: doors lock when ignition on; if doors are opened
and the engine is running, doors automatically lock again when speed >5 km/h
4: auto doors lock system disabled]

    c) Also do you think that this option has a true benefit ?

    Thank you for your comments.

    Re: Automatic door locking

I have mine set to (your) option 2. You can change at any time through the PCM. It is the most convenient and practical for me since I quite often have a passenger and am typicaly warming up the engine before they get in. If I lived in a high-crime urban setting, I imagine option 1 would be safer and worth the hastle, but fortunately I don't!

Do you have any risk in Paris of someone holding you up or stealing your car just after you get in? It is not common in New York today, though it happened to me there 15 years ago, and cars didn't have that option then!

    Re: Automatic door locking

If I am not wrong, you can set up this through the PCM only with the sport chrono installed. On my side, as I don't have it, I asked my dealer to set the option 2.

    Re: Automatic door locking

Nico997 and pnoble, thank you for your responses. pnoble, I am somewhat disturbed about your 15 years ago "incident"; I am sorry and didn't mean to recall you some bad memories. I haven't heard of people being robbed their car after they get in; I have heard of a technique where some car bump into yours at a light stop and then the driver comes to you to argue... and it turns very bad because some other passenger of the rear car steals your auto at the end...brrrr...terrible...

    Re: Automatic door locking

what really bothers me is on my wife's car when the thing gets even more complicted where you think you unlocked the doors, then go around to passenger side, try to open the door only to find it is still locked and then you have to got back to drivers side or use key to unlock THAT door. So dang complicated! Who's got time for it? Just make it so you lock both doors when you feel the need and unlock BOTH doors when you want.

    Re: Automatic door locking

    Zacharie,

No problem. It was a long time ago. I was parked on 32nd street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan and on the car phone with my wife. It was the middle of the day. Lots of people walking by.

Suddenly the door flew open and a black fellow pointed a gun at my head and yelled: 'Gimme your money, mutherfu#@$r!' My wife heard everything on the phone.

Everything went into slow motion and I was fantasizing about having a gun in my jacket pocket and shooting him through my jacket. But of course I didn't, so instead I handed over my wallet!

The fellow grabbed my wallet and slowly walked away while casually putting his gun back in his pocket. But no one seemed to notice.

Being an Englishman, an extremely pissed off and extremely reckless Englishman at this point, I jumped out of my car, adrenalin pumping, and gave chase, but thank goodness I didn't catch him - since he had a gun in his pocket and I didn't!

It was only when I got back to the car that I realized that my by now completely hysterical wife was still on the phone, assuming I had been shot dead. I was of course fine, though more than a little shaken.

    Re: Automatic door locking

Pnoble, I am glad you hadn't been hurt in this story.
Take care on the streets of NYC and be careful when you drive your 997.

    Re: Automatic door locking

I would venture to guess that NYC has gotten a lot safer since then. A bunch of have been driving our high-end cars around without incident for the past year.

    Re: Automatic door locking

Paris' streets worries me a lot more than NYC's.

    Re: Automatic door locking

As do London's. I'd just give them the keys and then find the car using the tracker device. Sub human scum these people.

    Re: Automatic door locking

Definitely NYC has got a lot safer by all accounts. I lived there 16 years without other significant incident, I'm pleased to say, and have lived in NJ for the past nine years, without any concerns at all. London, my home town, on the other hand is beset by rather violent Rolex thieves, pickpockets and rampant car theft among other indignities.

I never thought it would get to this point, but compared with Europe, the US is pretty damned safe! (Most of it anyhow!).

Violent crime in the US has decreased every year for the last ten years as I recall.
