Seeing new 997 on the road - no 'WOW' factor?

OK, please don't flame me, this is just my personal observation. I love the 997, but decided to go for a 987S for what I wanted from the car.

I finally saw my first 997, an 'S', out in the wild yesterday, rather than in the showroom or amongst other Porsches. It was a black (unsure if basalt or not) and on a fairly dreary day - the look of it head on as it came towards me did nothing for me, from that angle it just looked like 'another' car on the road. From every other angle the car looks fantasic. Perhaps it was a combination of familiarity (via showroom, test drive and this board) and the light but there you have it - head on and no 'WOW'.....

Re: Seeing new 997 on the road - no 'WOW' factor?

The "WOW" is in the driving

Re: Seeing new 997 on the road - no 'WOW' factor?

    100% agreed

    Great! by design...

No WOW factor is good. 911 is all about gentle evolution of a timeless design. Ain't broken don't fix it.

    Re: Great! by design...

The 9997 sure WOW's me. I think it's an absolutely beautiful car.

    Stacey

    Wow stinks

    Don't want no stinkin' wow.

Just want to go about my business on public roads and not stand out as a target.

People with more refined sensibility will enjoy seeing the Porsche slip past them.

    FLAME FLAME FLAME

    <Insert flame here>

i like to be unoticed, no point having a vandal magnet

Re: Seeing new 997 on the road - no 'WOW' factor?

I got WOWed the other day. Driving down a street and a 5 year old see me from the front and starts jumping up and down. He yells over to his father and uncle and starts pointing towards the car as I pass by. He was WOWed and problably be a Porsche owner in 20 years.

    Re: FLAME FLAME FLAME

I guess it depends what you want. I believe the front view of the 997s could be more agressive. I remember parking my Z8 next to my buddy's 996 and noticing a huge difference. That being said, in my opinion, every angle of teh 997s is beatiful and well thought out from an aesthetic standpoint, the rear end being particularly aggressive looking (which was my original criticism of the 996). Since moving from my Z8 to the 997s, other than the couple of quality issues I have been dealing with, I have no regrets. As far as the "wow" factor, it really depends on the individual as I have noticed many people walking around my car and gawking while parked.

Re: Seeing new 997 on the road - no 'WOW' factor?

That's pretty cute. A 5 year old. I took my 997S out a couple of nights ago to give my son (he turned 4 today, by the way) a ride. When I pulled the car out of the garage and parked it, he went to the front of the car and gave it a big hug on the hood. I thought he was going to scratch the car. So these little guys know what's going on.

Yes. That's the great part about it. Why should a beautiful car like this also be a "bombshell?" It's great that it reveals it's aesthetics in a sustained and less dazzling way.

This is hilarious. Hmnn following the logic of most of the posters, Porsche should stop offering colors, any new styling and make all Porsches army grey. Then you all can argue it is understated, not noticeable and yet beautiful.

Here is Webster definition of beautiful "EXCITING AESTHETIC PLEASURE" What people will say or do to justify the unjustifiable.

    Re: FLAME FLAME FLAME

Okay I'll bite. You think that's crazy?

The only Ferarri I would ever consider owning would have to be Red and a V12.

Since I don't want to routinely attract attention with a flaming red car and then the further intensive attention required by the exotic black stallion sticker on it, I would only buy a Ferarri for an occasional weekend drive.

Logic comes in many unmatching forms.

This is hilarious. You keep repeating the same thing over and over and over again. I don't think you realize it do you ya? You're too funny.

Nick's dementia is past the point of no return.

    Re: FLAME FLAME FLAME

I guess it makes him feel better about "something" to repeat it over and over... the only problem is that less and less people will listen or take him seriously as he keeps repeating his tantra.

FWIW, attention calling and beauty may be sinonimous in La Joya but not necessarily to everyone everyone else Nick. Let me give you an example, a young woman in a red dress with porn-star sized fake breast jobs walking down the street may grab a lot of attention but are not necessarily beautiful, while a young woman in a silver or white dress with perfect shaped normal-sized real breasts may be beautiful yet not call that much attention. Get it now?

    Re: FLAME FLAME FLAME

Maybe there is more behind Nick's behaviour than we imagine.
I wonder why he doesn't do the same Porsche bashing on other forums, at least not that intensive and passionate.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him working for Ferrari.

    Re: FLAME FLAME FLAME

Well he does have a type of businees "arrangement" with his Ferrari dealer, you could call him an employee, no?

RC you mistaken. My opinion regarding Porsche is the same on all boards. Brunner I believe 100% of what I write.

However, you will be happy to know that I have decided for the New Year to leave you guys alone. It is no longer sport. The market forces will make Porsche change and stop lifting your wallets.

I will continue to post but will refrain from initiating negative comments regarding Porsche. Should there be a negative post from some other poster, I may agree and indicate why. Fair enough?

I wonder which one has more 'driver involvement'?

Re: nberry - that's lame - if you have an opinion good or ba

Nick, nobody is telling you not to speak your mind, you can do honest constructive criticism as other people do here (including myself, I have always spoken my mind here). But thats not the issue, its the "campaingning", the repetition over and over of the same thing even coming out of contex, the sarcasm, exagerations and all the demagoguery that has no reason except for something other than simply trying to express an opinion.
If you just stick to being objective and constructive, no one will mind any negative comments.

The comment above is the problem and is disturbing on an enthusiast's forum. That's why people (at least myself) have a problem with most of your posts.

This says it all. This guy has been dellusional for some time. No level-headed individual buys sports cars as investments.

Nick buys his trophy garage queen F-cars as he thinks he will make money or at least not lose much. Well... he may, in the current climate, as long as he keeps them garage queens, but that is not what a sports car lover wants. I know several F-car owners who do drive their cars and never made money on their purchases - they depreciated like any other.

    Dellusion is a disease.

Carlos I know you mean well but what you interpret as "compaigning, exgaerations, demagoguery" (sic) I view as constructive. But what is motivating me to stop my "constructive negative views" is people who spend over $100,000 for a car do not want to hear negative comments regarding that car. You all have worked hard to achieve the financial security to be able to afford it.

Many on this board have ordered a new Porsche and will be taking delivery in the near future. I honestly feel the exhilaration when people write about imminent delivery of their new Porsche. Why should I deflate that feeling.

On the other hand, I must weigh my comments regarding those who have not made the purchase and want to hear both sides. This presented a real dilemma for me and in the end I decided people will find out what they need to know in deciding from better sources than me.

Make no mistake. I plan to remain part of this board but in a different capacity. I will not kiss up to Porsche, Ferrari or any other car manufacturer. If my 430 is a bust you will be the first to hear. Hopefully we will know in a couple months.

Re: nberry - that's lame - if you have an opinion good or ba

maybe this helps. I personally don't like a feature of the new Porsche, call it the square mirrors. I tell my friend who has one with square mirrors that his square mirrors suck. He's sez, yeah I can see what you mean, but I like them. I tell him he paied too much for the car and got suckered into buying it. He sez, yeah, I can see what youre saying and can accept that. Then I start on him about the lack of a spare. Finally he tells me to shut the f up and not discuss his car with him anymore.

This is what happens but much faster on boards like these. You have to be very tactful and sincere to get your difficult observations and opposing points of view across so people can respect what you say even though they disagree.

You're into cars, you have alot of first hand experience and people want to learn from you. After a few negative outbursts people can't muster the effort needed to sort thru the crap and find the value in the counterpoint you're trying to make.

You just have to be very courteous and reassuring when you say the "square mirrors" suck or the car is way overpriced and people are suckers for buying.

If you can't say this stuff in a niuce way, it becomes a sport. Remember what they say about winning an flaming argument on the internet, even though you think you won you're still mentally retarded

Re: nberry - that's lame - if you have an opinion good or ba

so nberry is a crusader for telling the "whole" story

hah, well hey i respect his opinion is just that it seems it comes way out of context a lot.. but i guess that is the nature of these forums, oh well i see a lot of his points but i think he exagerates a lot of what he says... oh well! Doesnt he have positive stuff to say, he probably does but his negative totally over shawdows it and that is unforutunate
