    New law in California regarding children in front seat

    I guess I don't have to worry about putting my 4-year old in the front seat for awhile now that we have a new law in California...

    "A new state law that goes into effect Saturday requires that all children under age 6, or weighing less than 60 pounds, be secured in a child restraint system in the back seat."

    What's amazing is:

    "Even though California's new law applies only to children under 6, several traffic safety groups recommend that children age 12 and under ride in the rear seat of vehicles."

    I think for a driver the rear seat is also much safer than behind the steering wheel. They should pass a law where a car only has rear seats, you know for safety.

    "The new law has a few narrow exceptions. Children can legally ride in the front seat if:

    * The car has no rear seat.

    * The back seats are side-facing jump seats or rear-facing seats.

    * The car seat or booster seat cannot be placed properly in the rear seat.

    If you have a , say , 2-5 year old AND an avail space in a back seat - why would you put a child in the front passenger place in a car seat , even if it's a vehicle where you can turn off the front passenger airbag ? How will you feel if you have a truck hit you head on and you as a driver are OK due to air bag deployment , but your front -seated kid is mangled due to air bag being off ( and not much better if he had been wacked by the air bag if it WERE on ). It's a NO WIN situation for the kid and you made that decision for him. It's great to be a "libertarian" , huh - like all those guys living paycheck to paycheck who say it's THERE life if they choose not to wear a motorcycle helmet on their Harley , but then conveniently declare bankruptcy so the taxpayer foots the $ half million hosp and rehab bill at the decrepit deficit ridden county-government run trauma center/ hospital which by the way is where 90% of the field injured are taken in most places no matter how tony your home zip code is.

    This year, it's safe to have your 6 year old in the front. Not next year, because of the new law. Did our cars become less safe? If you have a two-seater, it's ok to have your 6 year old in the front. Is that two-seater more safe to sit up in front than a four-seater? Or, because you have two other 6 year olds in the back in your 4-seater, now you can have your other 6 year old in the front. Did this one car all of a sudden become more safe because of the two other kids? I think I have a headache.

    If the law is written for SAFETY, then write it so it is, for God's sakes.

    I don't get how an airbag will "whack" your child anyway. If propely seated and forward facing, how does an airbag injure your child?

    There were over blown reports of airbags killing children, but these were unbelted and playing in the dash area when the airbag went off. Of course if the airbag didn't kill them, the collision that set off the airbag would have.

    The first generation air bags were developed with fresh adult cadavers AND with the high force required to keep an UNBELTED ( per NHTSA rules ) adult alive. So basically, prudent belt wearers were penalized for the protection of the " libertarian " driver. Their force internally decapitated some young children even as old as 10 ( whose neck structures are much more fragile ) -some who were seated and properly belted . Very small adult women, some under 5 ft tall were also injured.
    Now maufacturers , who fear lawsuits of course, have developed varying technologies, like air bag turn off mechnisms ( see my above post ) , two stage bags that inflate with two force levels depending on collision severity , etc. Some of these " smart " bags have bugs - for instance, some Lexus models have turned off the passenger bag when women are sitting in them because they weighed under 90 lbs !

    Please show some proof that children were decapitated while belted in the front seat. Or are you just passing along hear-say? All those injured were UN-Belted.

    They were " internally decapitated " like the official cause of death for Dale Earnhardt and many in car wrecks, in other words , they had their necks broken while sitting , fully belted in the front passenger seats in their 4 point harnessed forward facing child car seats. Infants in rear facing car seats , also belted in the front seat were killed similarly when the force of the air bag whipped them back and forth so violently. Didn't you read all the sob stories and hear all the TV reports , like the kid killed in the VW Jetta in the scenario above when the mom was in a very low speed parking lot head on collision that barely damaged the front but still deployed the "first gen " force airbag ? .
