    1988 924 Sport Edition

    Hey guys,

    I am looking at a 1988 Porsche 924 Sport Edition, also known as the "lightweight". I hear there are only 500 made of these and that it comes with the M030 option for the suspension, which is a factory option. Also, it has the 2.5 L 4 and no power anything to save weight, along with lighter cloth to lighten the thing up a bit. Does anyone have any information on this car? It is a very competitive, and very low price, and I am expecting to make it an auto cross car. Thanks in advance!!

    Are you talking about the 924S? This car was nearly identical to the 944, but without the widebody of the 944. Maybe that's why it's a "lightweight"...

    I would think that it's less desirable than a 944 for autox, since you cannot fit larger tires, but maybe the weight makes up for that...

    I think he means the 924 Carrera GT...

    Nope, don't mean the Carrera GT. I have talked to the owner and done a bit of research and found out that it bassically is an '88 924 S with about 10 more ponies, and a few weight saving elements. Also, sunroof delete and no passenger side mirror. Also, fabric was thinner to save weight and all came in black, with the W030 Suspension.

    I think what you have described is a variation of the 944,
    In the USA, it had 944 running gear in the narrower 924 body to decrease wind resistance from not having the fat boy 944 flares. It resulted in higher top speed and less weight.


    Things that just don't last on any of them:

    Ball Joints, and they are quite expensive to fix!

    Power steering rack, they leak like mad after awhile and cant be fixed, only replaced. Check prices!

    Water pumps - Life of two years, mileage no difference!

    Other than that they are a lot of fun! Nice neutral balance
    and handling. The only thing that gets really edgy on them are the rear transaxle bearings that seem born to whine.

    Enjoy it, just make sure its cheap enough to be worth the parts and hours you will be putting into it.
