Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown engine

Today is the 8th day out of service, and there is no estimate on when they can get a replacement engine from Stuttgart. Is there anyone out there who this has happened to.

Re: Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown en

No, you're the second. Some guy posted as CKH and claimed a blown engine then disappeared

Re: Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown en

Hey Surf, I believe that Trundle996 and RC deemed that CKH's claim was bogus. What ever happened to Skip.

Re: Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown en

What specifically do you mean by a blown engine?

Re: Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown en

According to the Porsche Tech guy, the Intermediate Shaft is defective, requiring that the whole engine be replaced at 4159 miles. Bummer.

Re: Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown engine

I thought Ruf was claiming to be the first tuner to do a 997 with a blown engine.

Uugh! When you said blown, did you mean supercharged?

Re: Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown engine

Common Frit, you know I mean that the engine is toast.

I'm still waiting for ckh's VIN number but he didn't send me anything yet. If I don't find his VIN number in my mail in the next four days, I delete his posts. And the Admin proposed to delete the user if this proves to be a bogus post. This is no way how to "have fun", thousands of people read this stuff on the internet and it could have a serious impact on Porsche sales. I accept ANY real post regarding problems but bogus ones have to be deleted. No mercy.

Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown engine

RC, don't you ever sleep. Yesterday I called Atlanta and pushed option 3. The gentleman took my information whereas, I wanted to discuss my vehicle with the district service dude. I told the guy (who was actually quite clear and professional) that I want Porsche to replace my vehicle with a new vehicle. The replacement should be warranted, since the vehicle is only 2 months old, and that a replacement engine for this type of vehicle will greatly diminish it's value. I should be getting a reply from the DSM or a "specialist" in 1 - 4 business days.

I don't think you would suffer from diminished value if Porsche replaced your engine. The fear is that the "numbers won't match". That is, if you run a report on your car at some time in the future, it will show that it doesn't have the original engine. I believe that when Porsche changes out the entire engine under warranty they also change the records to indicate the new engine serial number. A report in the future would indicate the replacement engine as the "original".

That assumes you keep the car long enough where the buyer cares about matching numbers. If you sell it within the next few years nobody would even check.

So, while you may deserve a new car because of the hassle this one has given you, I don't think you can get it because of a potential diminished value. If done properly you won't even know the replacement has been done and you now have a engine with less miles on it.

    Phil, your kidding me right.

How about I sell it to you

I was serious. Tell me how any future buyer would know the engine had been replaced? I know this because I had an engine replaced in my '99 and if you were to do a search on the original engine for my car it would show the replacement engine serial number. When Porsche replaces an engine under warranty they change the records. So once again I ask, how would a replacement engine diminish the cars value? It is not like a re-paint that can be seen by the skilled eye. No future buyer can determine it was done.

You may feel uncomfortable with a replacement engine, but I can't figure out why you think it would cause your car to lose value.

Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown engine

Sorry Phil, but I would know, and I wouldn't want to do that to someone.

It figures that you are a Salesman, I kind of figured that you were a Lawyer. I bet that you had never inhailed, had sexual relations with Monica, or that you showed up for duty in the Texas Air Reserve.

As far as value goes, make me an offer - 2005 Porsche 911 S Carrera MSRP new $100k, 4159 original miles, lojack, a real trailer Queen, with 0 miles on a new replacement engine.

Since you are a Salesman, (probably a used car Salesman) maybe you can sell it for me. (we'll talk commission later)

    Please don't post back.

Thank you for your kind attention.

    Sincerely,

    jb

Anyone else, I could use some helpful advise.

Do you feel better after the personal attack against me?

Re: Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown en

There's nothing wrong in replacing an engine on a 911. A Porsche is not a virgin maiden - it is a sports car, and engines can be replaced and do not detract from the value of the car. A Porsche, in particular, is mostly hand assembled - the engine is hand assembled and mounted on the car; the engine comes out all the time for repairs. There's no difference between the factory mating the engine to the car during assembly or a new engine be mated to the car at a Porsche dealer.

Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown engine

You guys are just too laid back out in Cali. I hear you Adias, but if it's no big deal, or no loss in value, then Porsche should come up with a replacement car. What does Porsche really have to lose - an unsatisfied customer. What do they have to gain - a loyal customer. Come-on guys, the car is only 2 months old.

And Phil, I do feel better . You'll never get it .

    jb

Re: Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown engine

    jboyko,

No need to explain why you want the car NOT just the engine replaced. It makes perfect sense. You thought you were buying an incredible machine. They sent you a lemon... Now, you are only asking them to take the lemon back and send you what you originally requested!

Re: Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown engine

So let me get this straight: you want to have the entire car replaced because of a driveshaft failure?

Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown engine

"B", it is not the driveshaft, it is the whole engine that is going to be replaced. I was told today by the District Service Manager Tom Drabers, that the engine should arrive at the dealer by December 20th. At that time it may take them another 5 or so days to install it. Then they can assess the failure with the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) unit.

    jb

Re: Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown en

I doubt you'll get a new car out of it. It seems like engine replacement is a good fix. It's unfortunate but just think you'll get to do the break in all over again

Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown engine

Faith my son, the right is for the righteous.

Also, breaking the car in for 4000 miles stunk. Besides an engine doesn't really break-in with zero weight synthetic motor oil.

Finally, an engine replacement is a good fix for a Ford Focus, not a Premier Gentleman's Sports Car.

How much Porsche stock, do you Cali boys own.

Oh and Adias, weren't you the guy that said that someone in Germany should be fired for not tightening a bolt on GG's car. Dude, think of my engine as a $30,000 bolt.

    Let the executions begin.

That guy probably tighten the bolt on all our cars. Don't they have a single assembly line?

Re: Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown engine

    JB:

I would not worry too much about the new engine but I would be really worried about the instalation. There will be many parts which need to be removed from the old and installed on the new. At the very least, the intake, fuel injction, altenator, clutch, gaskets, etc etc. At worst the heads or other major engine components. Mechanics get paid by the job and warrenty pays less, for most manufacturers way less. If the mechanic knows he can't do the job for the pay, and maybe he lost out the week before for the same reason your going to get a bad job. I just got my 997 and so far the dealer has been good.

The dealer told you it will take 5 days to install! Wow, you know they won't be giving a mechanic 5 days to do the job.

    Good luck.

jb, please, I understand that you're angry, I would be angry too but personal attacks don't help anybody. Phil is a longtime Porsche owner who really wanted to help and cheer you up, there is no need of him.

To be honest: I would prefer a new engine instead of a new car. I don't know if this would affect resale value (in Germany it wouldn't) but one thing is for sure: if you allow Porsche to install a new engine, they would "owe" you some. Meaning: you always find an open ear whenever you have an issue and you can be sure they take care of your problems ASAP. If you fight your way through to get a new car, I don't know this would be the better solution.
A broken engine wouldn't concern me. I would be more concerned about loose swaybars and other stuff.

    I wish you good luck!

    jb,

My first Porsche had to have a new engine replaced soon after I got it. Other than I had to break-in the engine again, the engine was fine and lasted 200K miles with no problems.

Also remember now you are getting a brand new engine, who knows how hard of a life the first engine had with all the test drives it had to endure.

I am not 100% sure, but I believe that when Porsche installs a new engine it is a complete new engine. I don't think they just send a block, I think it is a complete ready to run engine. The dealer just removes one complete engine and installs another.

    Correct. Very easy, plug-and-play installation.

Do I have the honor to have the 1st 997S with a blown engine

I'm with Rainier with this one. I'm sure that the engine will be fine. Considering my low build number, it seems that it would be another 300 to 1 chance, to get a bad motor again. But how good of a job are they going to do in the installation. DAMN, this car almost killed me. Out of nowhere the engine dies in the middle of the Turnpike, at 65 MPH, in the dawn darkness of 6 am, in heavy rain, with Tractor trailers wizzing by at 80 MPH swirving not to smash me, while I limp 3 lanes to the shoulder. Gentlemen, think of me when you cross that stop sign, knowing that you're going to make it, and then the engine without warning dies.

With a little music, I feel that I have a hit Country "song a brewing" here.

RC, Phil did make me feel better. I just thought that it wasn't too cool for him to ask me to compromise the notion of common decency towards others, because no "future buyer would know the engine had been replaced". He should have quit while he was ahead. I did kind of feel a little bad for hurting Phil's feelings though. Sorry Phil . So RC, when are you going to pick up the car, that Phil sold you last week. As far as having an ear, do you know how many times I have heard "sonny-boy if you run this job at a loss, I'll have a ton of business that you can make it up on.

Which reminds me, this car to me, represented 20 years of me, being in the fabrication industry. Maybe that's why I also feel bad, an engineering, manufacturing, or design failure has taken place, I've been dealing with that crap for 20 years, why did it have to be this too.

My 100k car is worth 90k Porsche makes over 10k per car (Chevy, Ford, and Dodge make that on their trucks). Porsche should do the right thing, they are not going to lose money guys, so stop feeling bad for them. Again, the car is 2 months old, how would you feel if it happened to you.
