    2016 "European" F1 Grand Prix in Baku

    I guess Easy is tied up this week, hope all is well, but since there was no thread yet, here we go...

    Quite a bit East (1400 miles, I heard) or Europe, thus the scare quotes, but it's a unique, interesting and seemingly challenging circuit. (Apparently some drivers, including Jenson Button, have also expressed safety concerns related to the prevalence of concrete barriers around the track.) Turn 1 could be mayhem, but, hopefully we will see a good race on Sunday.

    The circuit proved to be a bit too challenging for some drivers, including Hamilton, so far. I wouldn't be surprised to see some safety cars and even red flags tomorrow.

    Maybe it's not the curves on the track that proved to be too challenging for Hamilton smiley

    To name Azerbaijan as a location for the "European GP" is crazy...heart

    To all intents & purposes, it's located in Central Asia - the world has gone mad!!

    Should be a good race though...

    Bernie would title an F1 race in North Korea as the "European GP" if the sponsors made him more money by doing so Smiley

    Very impressed with minimal car damage and a good deal of overtaking. kiss

    Re: 2016 "European" F1 Grand Prix in Baku

    Moderately interesting race, although, not so much up front. Red Bull really need to get their act together, though; another weekend of bad decisions that cost their drivers.

    Great job by Rosberg, start to finish.

    I remember before the start of the season a lot of people were saying the radio ban was going to affect Rosberg more than Hamilton. That certainly doesn't seem to be the case, with Hamilton all at sea when he ended up in the wrong settings. Maybe he should spend a little more time in the simulator and studying the technical manuals.

    Surprised, but pleasantly, not to see any safety cars.

    Not sure about that 5 second penalty that Raikkonen was hit with when a number of other drivers apparently (according to the commentators on my broadcast, although I missed the Raikkonen "infraction") did the same thing but weren't penalized.

    Apparently, Rosberg had the same problem on his car as Hamilton, but had no trouble sorting it out. A case where Rosberg's obviously better technical preparation and ability to keep a cooler head creates quite a contrast.

    Re: 2016 "European" F1 Grand Prix in Baku

    @apias

    you're wrong, Nico had the problem because he changed delinerately the setting from good to worse and could therefore readjust easily!

    Lewis was in the wrong mode right from the start without having touched any switched, it was said that he'd have lost 0,3-0,5s per lap! :-(

    Re: 2016 "European" F1 Grand Prix in Baku

    Well, still, he needs to crack a manual.

    Re: 2016 "European" F1 Grand Prix in Baku

    @apias

    have you ever change radio settings on your car whilst driving at >200mph and trying to keep up with race speed?

    I guess not...

    NR pulled the switch (literally said) from left to right, that didn't had the desired effect, so he switched it back to it's basic position (as he knew where it was before)

    LH didn't do anything, suddently the car had some issues and he was switching around with now (positive) effects and by chance it worked after 12 laps of problems...

    This has nothing to do with studying any manuals but with two different problem situations.

    Re: 2016 "European" F1 Grand Prix in Baku

    He doesn't use the simulator, he doesn't walk the track, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't really spend his time studying technical papers regarding how his car works. Also, I'm not really buying the Mercedes explanation of this. Niki Lauda originally said they had the same issue, then the team revised the story. But, if the revisionist story were true, why is it that for Hamilton, "suddently the car had some issues and he was switching around with now (positive) effects and by chance it worked after 12 laps of problems?" If the revised story were true, he would have had problems from the start. Whenever Hamilton does something wrong, the team always covers for him.

    I think we'll continue to see this contrast between teammates through the season, and more petulant whining on the radio by Hamilton. Maybe they swapped mechanics around for this season because Hamilton's were tired of being berated in public on the radio.

    Re: 2016 "European" F1 Grand Prix in Baku

    @apias

    LH did change (for what reason ever) his setup for qualifying after beying by far the fastest man around Baku for all training sessions!

    Starting from this he wasn't the fastest anymore, crashed and his car didn't perform, even when he was driving in clean air.

    It's said that his changes were the reason for his poor race and that right from the start he could never had full usage of the potential of the car.

    Do you remember Niki Lauda's comment after the Barcelona incident? This was as like now as well deep sh*t and he had to "apologize" for his stupid comments about the incident and blaming LH.

    How ever 2016 isn't technical wise Lewis's year, but still a long way to go...

    Re: 2016 "European" F1 Grand Prix in Baku

    Barcelona was totally Hamilton's fault. A stupid, reckless move, period. Hamilton has no intelligence as a driver. All he had to do in Barcelona was feint to the inside, wait for Rosberg to move over to block, and go around him on the outside. It's the oldest trick in the book. Did he do that? No. He fully committed himself to passing Rosberg on the inside even though it was never going to be possible. Dumb move. Dumb driver.

    (Sort of reminds me of the time he ran into Jenson Button because he, "thought Button was going to let him by.")
