    996 tt purchase questions

I am shopping for a used 996TT and have a few question. I am hopeful a few from the group could help out. I am considering a tip and to use it as a daily driver.
I have a 997S on order but I have been thinking about canelling it and getting the used TT. It seems like most of you on this forum recommend this.

    1. Are there any better or worse years to consider. The 2003 is about in my price point.
    2. Is the X50 package a good thing to get. Obviously more power is good, but is it realiable, etc.
    3. What is the additional cost/value of a X50 option.
    4. Is there any value in getting a Porsche Certified used car. And why would a porsche dealer selling a clean low miles car not sell it as a Porsche certified vehicle. Is there some criteria to make if certified or is it simply a cost of an additional warranty?
    5. What is a good price for 03 model.

I greatly appreciate any info you could provide.

    Re: 996 tt purchase questions

I bought a 2002 TTX50, with about 3K miles on it. I love the car, although it does not have the same feel as my earlier air-cooled cars. I paid about $100K. I think the X50 is worth it, as the torque and bhp curves come on more quickly at lower rpms (it is the same set-up as in the new Turbo S). Also, although Porsche Certified warranties are worth about $2-3K, in my experience they are very worthwhile. On previous cars they have replaced an engine as well as an air con unit. Always there to fix any minor problems. I got a 6 yr, 100K mile warranty from the original in service date.

No, not that I know of. And the changes from year-to-year were not particularly significant.

    2. Is the X50 package a good thing to get. Obviously more power is good, but is it realiable, etc.

No. The consensus is to skip the X50 option and get a chip upgrade such as Upsolute. You will end up with equal/better power for much cheaper.

Also, I have no idea why you would consider a 997 when a 2002/2003 Turbo is equal in price or cheaper.

    Re: 996 tt purchase questions

So whats in the X50 option, is it only a chip or does Porsche offer something more with this option.

    Re: 996 tt purchase questions

    X50 involves quite a bit

reprogrammed DME , new intercoolers, turbos from the GT2 (KKK k24) and some other small things.

from what i hear, it is VERY worth it, and provides a better basis for future tuning. reliability is the same.

    Re: 996 tt purchase questions

So what is the incremental cost for a X50 option on a 2003 model.

    Re: 996 tt purchase questions

    Mike-

The X50 package has proven to be very reliable. Mine has a 6 year / 100k mile Porsche Certified warranty from when I bought the car used. I would like to see you get a warranty on the entire car like that from any aftermarket chip or performance outfit. That alone is worth the price.

On the used market, the X50 upgrade is adding about $8-10K on a low mileage used 996 turbo.
