New Dension ICE Link - 997 PCM & iPod?

Dension just upgraded their ICE Link product and lists Porsche as compatible vehicle environment: http://www.dension.com/main.php?pageid=65&topid=42&pid=51#Becker

At least owners of DTM, Mexico, Mexico Pro, Monza, Traffic Pro, Traffic Pro High Speed and Online Pro should be in luck.

Does anybody know if the PCM in the 997 is a Becker design? Does it use ICE?

Re: New Dension ICE Link - 997 PCM & iPod?

    I don't think so...their quote "pre-2003 Porsche".

Re: New Dension ICE Link - 997 PCM & iPod?

i thought the online pro used the MOST bus.

in any caes, this doesnt look like its going to work on any porsche made MY2003 and after

Re: New Dension ICE Link - 997 PCM & iPod?

A few weeks ago I have asked Porsche Exclusive about iPod integration but the feedback was not encouraging. If this was an issue for more people we could start an online petition

Re: New Dension ICE Link - 997 PCM & iPod?

On-line petition? Where do I sign???

Re: New Dension ICE Link - 997 PCM & iPod?

I've been using the FM transmitter option and it works pretty darn good. (Much better reception than in my MB wagon). Of course an integrated solution would be ideal, but this is better than nothing...
Meanwhile, it's 11PM here in NY on Wed and my turkey is just gone into the oven - should be just perfect by 3PM tomorrow :-)

Re: New Dension ICE Link - 997 PCM & iPod?

    Happy Thanksgiving!

RC: would it violate the rules of Rennteam if I posted the email address of someone at Porsche Exclusive so everyone who is interested in iPod connectivity could send a message?

Re: New Dension ICE Link - 997 PCM & iPod?

Does anyone know if it's possible to fit an FM modulator in line with the radio antenna and then use that as a way to get an aux in to the system?

    Martin

I don't think there is need for that because I heard that somebody from Apple or a company who offers ipod connection kits has already talks with Porsche about such a feature.

Here is a link from the Porsche website: http://www2.porsche.de/german/deu/accessories/exclusive/contact/default.htm

A friendly advise: don't send them a mail, call them.
All of them speak English but you have to be aware of one thing: they have a lot of work to do and you don't do them (or yourself) any favor if you keep them too long on the phone. Porsche usually expects customer feedback from the dealers.

Re: New Dension ICE Link - 997 PCM & iPod?

i don't want to sound like the bad guy, but online petitions haven't exactly changed anything, ever.

porsche is a profit oriented mega-conglomerate these days, if something isn't stopping people from buying their cars, they have no reason to change anything, case in point, me.

i've been whining for 2 years (since i got my 03 boxster S in october 2002) about why these newer cars don't have aux in like the older ones (a step BACKwards)

nothing has been done even in aftermarket, much less OEM in terms of a solution,

i dare not even dream of integration like the sort that BMW has. all i want is AUX in.

my point? - i bought 2 more porsches, and the aux-in issue barely topped my long list of things to ASK about, much less care about.

porsche will not do something unless it is going to have real results, like if they lost alot of business.

case in point, these cars sell themselves. they don't need to listen to customers

Re: New Dension ICE Link - 997 PCM & iPod?

Right, Moogle. But I think that the VW Phatbox solution might be available for Porsche too sooner or later. And it is a pretty good solution in my opinion.
The ipod "hype" didn't conquer the world yet, it is more of a US phenomenon, of course one which can't be ignored.

For me personally, the best solution would be a CF card/Microdrive type solution, a slot in the PCM which would read CF cards and Microdrives with MP3 files.
1GB CF cards are pretty cheap now (below 100 Euro already), a 4 GB Microdrive is around 260 Euro over here in Europe. Such a solution should be pretty easy adoptable but I guess some engineers at car manufacturers lack fantasy...or have too much of it.

Re: New Dension ICE Link - 997 PCM & iPod?

why not just open up the market for aftermarket head units, that would solve the entire problem.

the only thing the MOST bus does is make customers angry as well as make sure that you can only buy Porsche approved/manufactuered addons. (at this point, the CD changer is the only such "addon")...

The MOST bus has certain advantages and opening the bus for aftermarket stuff could create new problems for car manufacturers.
Porsche should defineteley rethink the current 997 PCM-is-mandatory situation because I already know people who love the 997 for it's somehow "classic" design but they hate the PCM system. I'm actually very pleased with it, there are only two or three things I want (actually one of them): a CD changer which is capable of playing MP3 CDs, a CD changer with a built-in CF/Microdrive slot (another variant) or a HDD MP3 Jukebox instead of the CD changer.

    Porsche...PLEASE!

Its called legacy. Why doesn't Porsche solve the problem with a simple AUX input. It could be analog type input as to not to cause problems with the digital bus. On PCs, did you notice they still have an RS-232 port? They do it for legacy products.

yea... why did they completely eliminate the aux input potential?

A few weeks ago I did speak with Peter Fraschka, in German, and was told that there's no iPod connectivity in the works.

Re: New Dension ICE Link - 997 PCM & iPod?

Just contacted Jochen Biemann about the MP3 microdrive and/or iPod solution and got the same result: Jochen said, "Sorry, but we don't have a solution for the connection of a MP3 player or Apple iPod to our PCM. There is no information if or when this will be available."

Thanks for the link, RC! Hopefully, more of us will contact Porsche with this request by phone, email, snail mail, courier pigeon, and so on.

Re: New Dension ICE Link - 997 PCM & iPod?

Whilst I now think that a 6 cd-changer is an ancient anachronism after having an iPod in my M3, does anyone know if a non-Porsche MOST changer would work in a 997?
I was thinking of one from Mercedes.

Re: New Dension ICE Link - 997 PCM & iPod?

Just received this from Dension Support [support@dension.com]:

    Daniel,

we are working on the MOST fiber optic version of ice>Link Plus, which can be integrated to PORSCHE. Expected availability is end of first querter, 2005.

    Regards... Dension Support
