Re: Audi R8 V10 Plus (2017 model) - Short Review
Audi Experience cars...there are a couple of them in the same styling with that yellow side blade.
My car is at the dealer right now, tuesday a Quattro Gmbh engineer is coming to check on the sound of my car. They analyzed a sound file and came to the conclusion that it isn't loud enough. 
Right now I drive a RS6 Peformance with Audi Sport exhaust (made by Akrapovic), a 9000 EUR option.
The Akrapovic exhaust changes the whole sound characteristics of the V8, I'm not a fan. The sound is only V8-like in the lower rev range but already with a higher pitch tone. In the higher rev range, the RS6 sounds now like the 991 Turbo S, no kidding. A very loud woosh sound with maybe a little bit of higher pitched V8 sound in it but not much. Also lots of "crackles"/pops, which don't fit this car too well.
Bottom line is: Not a good choice (Akrapovic) for the RS6.
Performance-wise, the RS6 is a beast on the Autobahn but it remembers me why I don't like turbo charged cars anymore. There is an annoying lag and shifting manually doesn't make any sense because shifting is slightly delayed and it is just not worth it.
Handling is quite OK for such a big and heavy car but you can feel the 2 tons when you brake, despite the ceramic brake system. It lacks the firm brake feel and instant brake performance of my R8.
I am so glad I chose the R8 as a weekend toy and not the RS6 as a family car but I like the RS6 and I think it is a good product. A product worth over 150k EUR? Not exactly. Maybe 120k or so...
Also, very weird: The chassis has a tendency to move ("jump") quite a lot in Dynamic mode, especially on bad roads but even on the Autobahn. The R8 is sitting feeling like a train going on rails, you barely feel anything, despite the stiffer setup. So I hate to say it but the R8 is actually more comfortable in Dynamic mode, quite surprising.
Long story short: Nice car (RS6) but only as a family transport or daily driver. The price is too high though, the Akrapovic exhaust not worth it, the interior is nice but could need an upgrade but most importantly, the biturbo engine is powerful but after driving a V10 n/a engine, there is no going back, I just realized it. The 8-speed auto works well but not even close in speed or fun factor to the R8 DCT. I just realized how much I love my R8.
Btw: Also saw this beauty today at my dealer, what a nice car. Dealer also has an almost new Huracan Coupe with only 3000 km for 190k EUR. If someone is interested. ;-)

You remember that neighbor of mine I told you about? The one with the McLaren 12C Spider who got into a fight with his neighbors because the car was too loud?
Well, I just met him this morning and had a chat with him:
1. The neighbor who called the police on him and who went to the major because of him, he...moved away. 
2. He is selling his McLaren. Reasons? You need to be fast to have fun in the car, service is not what he expected and he got bored with it.
3. After considering getting the 650S, he walked away from the idea "because it basically drove and sounded like his old 12C".
Now he is getting a...Lamborghini. Huracan.
Since summer has ended, he will get the car early next year.
Another one falling for the V10.

When you say the exhaust crackles and pops do you mean farting? That is what my Targa SE does. It farts when lifting your foot off the pedal. I guess that is by design because many feel it gives the sound/impression of a very high performance car.
MY GT3 didn't do that nor did any of my Ferrari's. To me it sounds like farting and claiming it is crackling and popping is like putting lipstick on a pig.

Its more of a ricer feature that suits highly tuned 1.6 litre cars.

I find it ridiculous on the AMG A45 , or one the Golf R , Audi S3 etc........ but it gets embarrassing on a high end sports cars .
Same with the exhaust sound on the 458 . The car sounds it does 250km/h when it is driving 50 km/h

There is crackling, popping and farting.
The 991 Turbo S, most regular car models with this "feature" sound bad because it is a very annoying sound most of the time. The Akrapovic (Audi Sport) exhaust on my current RS6 Performance loaner is almost embarrasing because it just doesn't fit this type of car. Also, you cannot really "control" this sound, something you can do with the R8 (if you downshift under 3000-3500 rpm, there is basically no crackling. On the R8, if you downshift at let's say 5000 rpm, there is a pretty nice "backfiring" noise, very clear and with a high pitch tone, not the farting Nick was referring to.
My 911 GTS also has this backfiring with a high pitch tone but it sounds OK.
In the 911 Turbo S, it sounds from the inside as if someone is hitting the undercarriage with a hammer and outside like some sort of dampened fart.
It really depends on the car but on most cars, you can turn this off by turning off the sport exhaust. Or by using the throttle foot (not really possible in DCT auto mode or using an auto tranny.

Most of the farting is when I drive in sport mode. Not so much in sport+. If you drive in regular mode, no farting but no SE. 
So I drive using sport+.

It is. 488 GTB without optional sport exhaust sounds pretty civilised to my ears. More matured but, sporty at the same time.

From what my dealer told me early this year, the silver/chrome tips only get replaced with black/titanium tips.

Alright, you were talking about Capristo and the like, not really fair to compare stock versus aftermarket.

Many aftermarket exhausts for turbo charged cars change the sound sometimes to a completely different one and not necessarily a better sound. I would be very careful.
Examples: Akrapovic for Turbo S and RS6...not my cup of tea.

Interesting info for potential R8 buyers: Due to high demand, it seems that Audi will offer the Huracan lift system for the R8 as well sometimes next year or latest with the next model year. Also Audi seems to be seriously reconsidering the currently used shifting paddles (steering wheel) but a solution similar to the Huracan seems unlikely. Paddles may get bigger and better material though.

I wonder if that means you get the driving experience and also get to use it for getting around during your stay. It would suck to get out there, only have the car for a few hours, then have nothing to do. Would be a good time and a solid deal if it was yours to just use during your stay.

New Porsche V6 engines for the R8. The Panamera 4S engines will power RS4, RS5 and entry level R8. It was developed jointly by Audi and Porsche for high performance specifications models.
