Not sure why Whoopsy is opposed to a normally aspirated flat six GTS with a manual transmission.   Without the additional volume of the GTS model, it would be extremely difficult for Porsche to make a valid business case for the new 4.0 liter flat six engine for the GT4.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see that engine in the 911T also...

    Re: Cayman GT4 & 718 Spyder -- Pistonheads review

Yes, when I heard about a "4.0" coming I thought. "well done Porsche, with PDK, this will be a nice set-up", but, Porsche thinks, that the whole world is in favour of a manual transmission now, when some years ago everybody was asking for a super-fast auto with paddles...I use my PDK on the track in manual and have the involvement I think I need...when I drive my wife's 987 Boxster it feels ok, but a bit "old School"

...I am looking forward to the next generation of the "911 T" as a fun car, WITH PDK, slip diff, 90 l, AND, a base 3.0 l Turbo, which I believe is a very very underrated fantastic engine .... Therefore, I am keeping fingers crossed that the "4.0 l" will NOT be part of a future 992 T package ... by the way, I have not heard anything about the "4.0 l" being "certified or whatever" with PDK ?

And, last but not least, I now that Cayman / Boxster owners are a minority group here, but, perhaps the mods could open a thread on the GTS 4.0 ? (thx.)

Will be interesting to see what gearbox they put in it. It deserves a PDK-S with nice linear ratios. But it will be very quick if it gets them.. I hope it does but I wonder where they will place it price-wise to fit in the chart in the right place.

They always fuck them up on purpose to maintain the pecking order.  Oh well. Marketing.   Imagine if rules prevented a car company from building more than one model.  Just a thought. Smiley

I am not opposing the GTS with manual. I am opposing that it is manual only. The manual GTS literally will be competing against just about the same customer base as the GT4.

The GTS will be capable enough on a track for 95% of their clients, the other 5% will be the one that needs a GT4 in order to perform better.

For mostly street driving, the GTS will be the better car. Restricting it to manual only limits the sales number. Offer both like they do on 911 GTS and that new engine will practically pays for itself.

And then it will be a pointless exercise again as the performance of the PDK versions of GT4 and GTS is so close.

In the 911 range, at least the engine configuration between the GTS and GT3 is different, for the 718, it's the same engine with 20 less HP only.

    Re: Cayman GT4 & 718 Spyder -- Pistonheads review

One would rather relish the thought of the last of the marginally affordable normally aspirated flat six engines made by Porsche than debate the merits of Porsche’s marketing decisions.  They evidently feel that given the engineering and associated costs to further differentiate the two variants wasn’t worth it.

    Re: Cayman GT4 & 718 Spyder -- Pistonheads review

Another difference might be the possibility of actually buying a GTS. Most people couldn’t get a GT4.

I just find something distasteful about filling the speculators pockets and perpetuating the games.. Also if I am going to pay full new price for a car I want to spec it and get the full warranty.

And there are several new Spyders and GT4 standing at Porsche dealers not sold, waiting for customers. They got more cars that they could sell.
In Germany it is easy to get a Spyder or GT4 this year. Some people told me they even got offered some discount if they order a car. Not big discounts but in the range of 1-4%.

    Re: Cayman GT4 & 718 Spyder -- Pistonheads review

I think it is a combination of saturated market and the lack of PDK. Porsche is over estimating the demand of manual shift cars.

    Re: Cayman GT4 & 718 Spyder -- Pistonheads review

If one recalls correctly, didn't Porsche state that the 718 GT4 was not a limited production model unlike the previous variant.  This decision was made to prevent speculation in the marketplace, so it is working as anticipated.  Now consider the 718 GTS as the touring version of the GT4 and all is okay in the world.  Also consider that Porsche probably wants to limit the 4.0l six cylinder version in the EU to avoid excessive fines for exceeding the CO2 limits currently being imposed.  One way to limit sales is to produce cars with manual transmissions only.

Thanks for posting. The margin to the 992 S is not that much and temperatures etc. could easily lead to others results, However, the GT4 seems to have gotten the advantage from the curves, where hp and torque of the 992 S may not be that relevant...This course at Magny-Cours suits the GT4 more than the 992 S...amazing little beast...Smiley
