Trying to fit the cat in the back -- sad that the gov shot this gorgeous guy but 10 dogs killed last 2 weeks. No hiking/nordic w/o carrying 10 mm for us. The cats come down after the Elk, the oldsters take dogs and other easier targets.

I find it very sad to have a country with so low number of people living there and being obliged to kill the native animals of this land. I would force people to put their dog inside homes to keep them safe and let these big cats living a free life.

We don't owe the world anything, we humans are predators, the worst kind and we should be OK with it because otherwise, we are going to move from the top of the food chain to the bottom. Sad reality maybe but it is how it is.
I agree however that such beautiful animals shouldn't be killed, unless it is strictly necessary for us humans to survive. That said, I think that it is a difficult thing, to love animals and especially dogs and then to watch a beautiful animal like the one in the picture die from the hand of a human, "just because it bothered us".
What I find worst though and I really don't like them are...zoos. Keeping animals caged is the worst thing humans can do, almost as worse as hunting them for pleasure. I would never ever kill an animal for hunting pleasure and I'm not even that much into animals like other people. I would solely kill to defend myself or my family and this is valid for all kind of species, including animals.

MY Labs are my family, so I certainly agree. As I said above Govt killing because someone's dogs was killed is awful, but once the old cats come down into the neighbourhoods, children can't play outside either. And the olds lions are on the way toward death with missing teeth and no strength to take down their prey when young and strong: full size 8-1500 lb Elk, so they take pets.
And irresponsible losers who put their dog out alone before dawn or after dark are the problem as the missile touches on. We hike mid day and always carry the 10 mm Glock for a shot in the ground if needed.
However, a human wildlife interface is unavoidable in the Rockies, just keep the govt out of it - hard to do when stupid people exist.

I'm amazed how huge that thing is, I always thought they were dog/labrador sized 
Wonder how fast my dog would run if he'd see that coming.

Rarely are they over 150#, the olde guye is > 180 # just gigantic. 10 mm or 45 if close, the neighbours up canyon use 300 Win Mag.
Sueño passed this test, getting his jaws strong, the truck plastic ammo can full of biltong..... empty!!!
