    First Weekend with my 997S

The artic silver 997s(chrono/black full leather/bose/nav) was delivered to my house on Saturday morning. The salesman went over the car with me for about an hour with most of the time devoted to PCM. I then walked around the car for a long time and started relating a lot of the threads I have read on this forum to my own experiences.
I had a '99 996 c2 and this car's presence is far superior. The build quality rivals any car. The fat-assed rear end, the oval lights, the 19" tires, and the enhanced classic 911 cockpit easily matched or improved on the styling legacy of the 911. The interior is vastly improved and the Bose sound system will never need aftermarket enhancements.I was honestly skeptical from reading every 997 thread in this forum, but after three days, the car only looks more impressive.
I drove my '99c2 hard. I havn't even begun to explore the upper reaches of the 997s because I'm respecting the break-in period. Again, I was fretting over the "lack of power" issue based on the many threads people posted in this forum. I even put a deposit on a used '02 turbo because of this imaginary "lack of power". Obviously, numbers don't lie, but Porsche must be using the largest horses availible in the 997s.
From the moment I left my driveway, I never lacked power! I never wished for more. I always find hard to believe that someone would be able to know .2 or .3 seconds differences from 0-60 times. Once your in the mid 4secs, egos aside, there is not large difference. I won't drag the 997. I'm going to drive it hard and enjoy it with my wife and friends around town.
I just re-read the above and I feel that if I ramble to much, I will lose the emphasis of this post(unmatched styling, proud-to-be-owner quality, NO "power issue").
I walked away from this weekend with so many smiles and giggles underneath my breath that I hope current 993 and 996 owners realize that your car is in the 997. The 997 takes on all the best 911 characteristics.

Sidenotes: -I enjoy Porsches, but enjoy many other more important things including my 4 yr old daughter. This is the SAFEST sportscar.-RC: you're like a masked Porsche superhero; no one knows who you are, but everyone owes you a thank you. Thank you for your knowlwedge and hard work. I'd buy you a beer anytime... please do something about he overbearing and boring ferrari dude.

Re: First Weekend with my 997S

congrats for your car rockhead!enjoy it ,like you said very well ,its a marvellous car .by the way what is the break inn period you respected?how many miles?

Re: First Weekend with my 997S

Congratulations, what a well written piece straight from the heart that acts as a tonic for all us poor people still waiting for delivery
As a new forum member I couldn't agree with you more about RC, his comprehensive thread 'test drive' contains more info than any other article I have seen to date and was the reason I joined this forum...the mans a porsche info legend I'll buy the second pint with pleasure

Re: First Weekend with my 997S

    Rockhead,

Congratulations. I got mine last week also: same color, same kit - identical. I had wanted the seal gray but love the artic silver. I appreciate your mention of what is really important in life. And your four year old daughter will fit nicely and safely in the back seat. Mine, at 16 and 19, alas won't!

One small, but important feature of this car that no one has mentioned to date: astonishing rear view mirror visibility, especially via the side mirrors. I have never driven a car that comes close. (Maybe it was the same with the 996, but I never had or drove one). Certainly way better than my M5.

    Paul

Re: First Weekend with my 997S

    Welcome aboard, Rockhead.

Enjoyed reading your impressions, and look forward to a lot more posts like that one.

Re: First Weekend with my 997S

    I agree.

On the power, my BMW M Coupe at 315hp in a lighter car didn't give close to the aim-to-please sense of acceleration ability, especially at lower RPMs. You had to downshift and punch it, rather than just ask for more.

The Bose is superb. Have you tried the spacial enhancement setting? I usually want flat frequency response and eschew gimickry, but this effect is pleasing in a natural sounding way.

We have a little girl that just started walking. You're a neighbor of mine in NH (I'm in MA), I imagine that along with me you're hoping the snow will stay away a little longer than usual this year. Any plans for snow tires? For the moment I'm thinking of just using alternate transportation, but my M with proper tires was great in the snow; the 911 has to be as good.

Re: First Weekend with my 997S

Congrats Rockhead! All I can add is that waiting for mine at the end of January is killllllllllinnnnnnnnnngggggggg me! Oh man! I bet it snows on the day of delivery.

Re: First Weekend with my 997S

thank you for the positive feedback.
Dhayek-if my memory serves me right, RC didn't recommend jamm'in it until the oil temp was normal and i'll try to vary the rpm's up to 6000 for the first 2000. No cruise control.
pnoble-i couldn't agree more since most of the traffic will be in the rear
booger-I'm still struggling with the am/fm presets. PCM's technology is new to me and I will enjoy browsing through it. thank you. I'm enjoying the "sport" special enhancement button below the PCM. What a weekend- Porsche on Saturday, went to Patriot's game Sunday daytime, Red Sox party Sunday night!

Re: First Weekend with my 997S

do you have the sport chrono?

Re: First Weekend with my 997S

    Congrats!

Re: First Weekend with my 997S

Rockhead, would you be able to take some pictures for us? My 997S on order is the same color, but with a blue interior.

Does the manual say not to exceed 4200 rpms on the 1st 2000 miles?

Re: First Weekend with my 997S

yes and that glorified funky stopwatch looks ........... believe or not, ..........really nice. was that out loud?

Re: First Weekend with my 997S

Holminator sorry, I'm barely able to reply to posts nevermind pictures. can't you tell! I generally stay in the middle of the tach for the first 2000mls. Before my next drive I will get an exact tach max for break-in. under 4200rpm would be pretty tough to take for that long of a time.

Re: First Weekend with my 997S

    Rockerhead,

The manual says less than 4,200 RPM for the first 2,000 miles. You say 6,000. Tell me where you saw that! Keeping under 4,200 RPM is driving me mad and causing me to work the gears a lot more than I'd prefer to.

    Paul

Re: First Weekend with my 997S

Pnoble- I will stay within the reccomended 4,200 rpm as best I can. I am not recommending 6000rpm! I couldn't help myself as I was accelerating steadily in third gear and a downshift easily put me close to 5000 rpm. I'm not concerned with these infrequent occurances because the engine wasn't abruptly taken to these "high" rpms and it occured on "near perferct" conditions on the on-ramps and off-ramps of Interstate 95 after running the car for over an hour. This will sound "bad", but it seemed "normal". The dealer said nothing about max break-in rpm, but was more concerned about varying the rpms. I always allow for a significant warm-up.
