    Sat Nav and traffic info

    Will the 997 nav re-route or show traffic warnings?
    just wondering, as more recent systems seem to have a facility.
    My first porsche and I'm on a steep learning curve

    From the Porsche website:

    Navigation module
    The optional GPS navigation module includes dynamic route guidance via TMC (Traffic Message Channel). This function provides a visual overview of traffic congestion as well as automatic calculation of alternative routes. Other features include a DVD drive for navigation data and an easy-to-use menu structure. After entering your destination, the system determines your position via GPS and then guides you to your destination via the best possible route.

    So I guess "yes" might be more accurate (in Europe at least).

    Thanks Bill, such a great car but the phone and satnav are disappointing.. doesn't make sense when considering all the technology advances.

    Of course, there's no guarantee it'll work! (especially with all the pirate stations hijacking the RDS system in London)

    Yes, good point..lets hope it works.
    Although it does work with BMW 's newer navs

    I think the answer is "no". There is not the traffic reporting and re-routing system in the US that there is in Europe. I think XM radio is attempting to offer traffic reporting in some US markets, but not integrated into Nav system.

    Yes - I've heard that the BMW system seems to work OK in Great Britain as well.

    I have never seen RDS here in the US. Hard to believe, since it's so common in Europe.

    Yes...somehow. But Dynamic Traffic Route Guidance is not available in the UK, only in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland.
    Based on the dynamic routing function, it can re-route and find an alternative route if there is a traffic jam.
    It does not support the traffic hazard warning system in the UK.

    The top Acura uses XM radio to integrate traffic into the Nav system. Not sure if any other make does the same yet in the US.

    I think part of the problem is that our radio frequency band is probably more crowded than the ROW. Traffic info is only avaliable on satellite. XM satellite radio is both an audio service and a data service.

    The 2005 Acura RL has XM Nav Traffic which places updated traffic incident data on the navigation map, but is for information only. It does not yet automatically re-route the driver around traffic areas. The driver can use teh information to change his/her route. It is available in 20 markets around the US. A definite improvement, but not a complete system yet.
