Re: Problem with tires on the 991

    RC:

The new N1 is incredibly fast on dry roads, almost up to semi-slick performance. So I'm very very curious about the performance in the wet, keep us posted!

Like I said, it was raining like crazy yesterday and I drove pretty fast (not much traffic around...), including several roundabouts but no loosing traction, at all. PSM was on, sport modes off. It is possible that my AWD GTS has a different ESP setup but... yes Speed was around 50-60 kph...not slow...for a wet roundabout.

I will fit the N1's after the summer as well so will also report on my own findings Smiley

RC, you have a 4 GTS. Especially in wet conditions that is a big difference for the rear tires. They dont have to handle the whole engine power when press the "pin". A part of the engine power goes to the front wheel. So the rear tires have more grip left for the lateral forces.
The car feels much more planted in the wet and tire issues may be hidden.

Re: Problem with tires on the 991

Maybe the active motor mounts in concert with the factory damping actually can induce just enough rear positive camber effect that slightly raises the roll center and changes the tire contact patch when cornering.. That would induce initial understeer and then oversteer from momentary reduced traction in the wet during weight transfer.  Would be interesting to know if the same complaints about tires and wet handling were also made by owners of cars with the aftermarket Bilstein system. Just a idea.

This doesn't really work that way when you do a roundabout but I agree, the ESP setup of the 4 GTS may be different, more on the "safe" side in the wet but this is just an assumption. I will try do to some different approaches when driving into and through the roundabout, so maybe I can provoke heavy understeer and notice when it happens.

Also, my car has PDCC, which also may influence the tire behavior in the wet.

Carlos, does your friend's car have PDCC? I guess not?

I don't think he had PDCC, but I will check when I see him.

I have experienced more oversteer and understeer in the wet roundabouts, which is already strange since in the particular instance were I lost the traction its the typical understeering situation not oversteer, because its not when exiting and giving it throttle with heavily turned steering wheel, but rather when coming into the roudabout under deceleration and turning the wheel. Its really some odd behaviour that the tires have.
