Tesla will either partner with one of the major Chinese automakers or will be completely acquired by one of those companies.  Musk's deal with the Chinese government to fund Gigafactory 3 set the basis for such a transaction.  Musk needs to jettison the remnants of Solar City and take the massive restructuring loss but he won't take the move based on his lucrative compensation scheme to drive up the market cap of the company.

BMW remains a better fit with either Honda or PSA.

Letting Tesla falling into the hands of the Chinese would be very sad. No matter what we think about Elon Musk and his strategy, Tesla is an icon in the EV market and a pioneer.

I still believe that a major US manufacturer should team up with Tesla but I'm not sure Elon Musk can get along with US auto industry managers...maybe I'm wrong though.

BMW is still pushing (in the shadows) their own hydrogen tech, so not sure how Tesla would fit in here.

Musk would not survive in post following any M&A. It would be a precondition.

Guess panel gap and alignment do make a difference as a raft of Model 3s show signs of surface rust from poorly aligned panels.   https://insideevs.com/news/373339/new-evidence-tesla-model-3-rust/

    Re: Tesla Roadster

So Tesla announced they sold 97,000 cars, less than what Elon had promised earlier. I believe he has yet to be correct ever in his promise, think he is batting 30 for 30 now in 'lies'.

It's still a record number, it's great that they can grow the sales number, but selling the cars was never a problem for Tesla, making money to survive is. The 2 quarters that they had booked profits were from EV credit sales, not from car sales.

The product mix has also moved even more to the cheaper and lower margin, if there is a profit margin to talk about, Model 3. The vapour ware Model Y will be another low margin car that will drag Tesla's profit margin even more.

In a rush to set sales record, Tesla moved a lot of the sale to leases, that crush their crash flow even more. Think they are up to 15% now.

They badly needed a new Model S, and in a way the Model X too, those redesigns will cost a lot of money, not to mention getting ready for the Model Y, and 2 more vapour ware as in the Pickup and new Speedster. Then there is the giant white elephant, Tesla Semi, a product they should have gone after sooner, before all these other low margin mass market cars.

They still have some money in the bank for them to burn, so the crush is a bit far away, but they really really need to solve the fundamental problem of trying to make money selling cars in order to survive.

Now Elon's constant fiddling of the prices doesn't help consumers, nor the flip flop on features to be included as standard. It's been going on for long enough, like the last 10 quarters, that the best time to buy a Tesla will be 2 weeks before end of March, 2 weeks before end of June, 2 weeks before end of September and 2 weeks before end of December. One always knows Elon will be desperate to throw in a lot of goodies and great price just to move a few in stock cars to try and make his lofty number promised to Wall Street.

Watch for Tesla to release lower revenue numbers for Q3 when compared with Q2 as those price reductions and the dramatic reduction in Model S/X sales are realized.  Demand for the Model 3 in the States as plateaued as Tesla introduced the Model 3 into several new markets during Q3 too.

    Re: Tesla Roadster

Interesting little development with a YouTube channel's Tesla Model X Raven not being able to meet its quoted 0-60 mph time.  Several of the comments on why the car isn't able to meet its acceleration time is the setting of the suspension.  The Model X was tested in the low suspension setting and some have recommended moving that setting to very low since Tesla has limited torque in the upper suspension settings to help preserve the integrity of the CV joints.    If true, once again, the lack of real development process for this vehicle has reared its ugly head.

Why Is This Tesla Model X Is 1 Second Slower Than It Should Be?

Tesla vehicles normally overdeliver on what the company promises. Why not this one?

    Gustavo Henrique Ruffo

Most of the videos we talk about at InsideEVs come with solutions or present results to solve doubts. This one poses a question: Why is this Model X slower than Tesla says it is? It belongs to The Fast Lane Car YouTube channel, also known as TFLCar. It has been using it to present towing challenges electric pickup trucks will probably face. Now, it has a challenge of its own.

Roman Mica starts the video by stating how consistent Tesla is when it releases a performance number for one of its cars. They had a Tesla Model 3, and it went from 0 to 60 mph exactly in 4.4 seconds. As Tesla said it would.

The Model X Dual Motor that belongs to TFLCar has the same 0 to 60 mph time, according to Tesla: 4.4 s. But Mica says he feels the car is not that fast. And he puts it to the test.

The results are consistent but in a wrong way. The electric SUV hits 5.5 s in two runs. As the Model X did not have a full battery, Mica goes to a Supercharger to see if that is the problem.

    Tesla Model X

When the Tesla ends the charging process, it goes on testing again. And the result is the same: 5.5 s.

One single second may seem very little difference, but compare that to the alleged 4.4 s Tesla says the Model X takes to go from 0 to 60 mph. That’s 22.7 percent more time than the EV should take.

    tesla model x with bikes

Mica asks viewers to suggest what may be wrong with the testings. Some of the people commenting said the car should be in the lowest suspension setting. Some others that it could not be in Chill mode, but Mica must have done all that already.

What do you think the problem is? Can it be something the presenter is not doing correctly? Can it be something he should do? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

Video Description Via The Fast Lane Car On YouTube:

Our Tesla Model X is supposed to go from 0-60 miles per hour in just 4.4 seconds. But does it? We recently tested our Brand new 2019 Tesla Model 3 and it did 0-60 MPH exactly in the time Tesla claimed. In this video we check the claims and attempt to learn why our brand Tesla is not as fast as it should be!

So Tesla cars WILL fail. Not a IF, but a WHEN.

Literally this is a super simple problem that they didn't think of before when they first design the car, they used consumer grade chips for cost purposes instead of more expensive industrial grade chips. Also problem with their OS programming.

The log files are there for Tesla to capture and analysis their beta software, this doesn't happens with any other normal products, no one use their customers as beta testers.

    RIGHT!!! SmileySmileySmileySmileySmiley

To be fair Porsche didn't update the OS every 5 days or whatever, and there had only been 4 hardware exchange campaigns, 2 of them for the same components and then another 'repair' campaign for a wire clip.

Smiley I guess Tesla tries to play tricks again, these are probably heavily modded Tesla S for achieving the record times Elon Musk kind of "promised". Nobody really cares what is under the body (chassis, etc.) once the numbers are out and Musk knows that. I could be wrong though.

Are you sure the roadster will have such a long wheelbase? Doesn’t make sense to collect data on a test mule when the chassis dimensions are all different.

    Re: Tesla Roadster

So, with the 10-Q filing, the mystery, or not really a mystery, of how Tesla made money last quarter emerges.

As usual, it was their accounting tricks. They just 'turn down the knob' for provision for warranty work and voila! Instant profit.

We can see this coming from a mile way, when Elon said he will squeeze the shorts. Selling cars is not black magic, approximate revenue and profit can be fairly accurately guess from selling price and numbers sold, and educated guesses with running cost. The only wild card left literally is the warranty provision, carbon credits and the 'software' that he pre-sold, all of which he can manipulate.

It's just a numbers game. Like Enron before, all accounting tricks.

147mil on selling 97,000 cars. Less than $1500 profit per car.

Tesla employs over 10,000 Americans. I don’t care about how they survive as long as they do. And for the naysayers shorts, I hope their billion dollar loss is a wake up call.
