3200 pounds ISN'T heavy for a fully optioned car that passes 2007 crash tests......................

Average new car weight in USA, 3850 pounds by the way.

It's too heavy for a nimble sports car; reason: it's just too big!

Re: Edmunds review of the 430 along with video.

The Video is great... love the start-scene at the end... car sounds almost like a F1... GREAT!!!

AND - yes, the car is to heaviy...

Re: Edmunds review of the 430 along with video.

You guys are all nuts lol.
How can you say 3200 pounds is heavy????
Maybe it's not light, but it sure isn't heavy.
For gods sake the Enzo Ferrari weighs only 180 pounds less!!!!

Re: Edmunds review of the 430 along with video.

    BluCam....compare with a Lotus Eclipse!

Re: Edmunds review of the 430 along with video.

Right, Elise/Exige may be the wrong comparision. But nevertheless the F430 (like all other new cars) is too heavy.
Look, a 360 had a weight of appr. 1400 to 1450 kg (officially it was 1390 kg). Now Ferrari claims the kerb weight of the F430 to be 1450 kg. Other sources say the weight will be up by a whopping 10 percent, although the car is not that much bigger. All the advantages of the alu spaceframe chassis Ferrari introduced with the 360 are eaten up. So for me there is only one logical consequence: if they can't reduce weight further, because the necessary materials would be too expensive, they have to make their cars smaller again! Heck, who needs a Modena which is 4.51 m long? Make it 30 cm shorter, reduce it to the seize of a 355 and all weight problems will end in smoke without contacting your local weight watchers support group.

Yes, I agree with the idea of smaller. But for those who play golf and would like drive their F355, it cannot fit 2 people with 2 golf bags, but F360 can.

Bottom line is despite the additional weight it substantially out performs the 360 in every category.

Also, do not lose sight of the government regulations which are making all new cars heavier.

Re: Edmunds review of the 430 along with video.

    Rossi,
That is a good suggestion. I'm not sure why the 360/430 are such large cars. It needn't be, if your primary purpose is weekend driver. However, my ideal sports car is a bit different than a Ferrari. 911/AMV8 sized cars seem a bit better in my eye. However, with smaller size and lower weight, horsepower needn't climb, and that goes against marketing strategy IMO. On the wide open road, the size isn't an issue other than for weight considerations.

    Nick,
With added weight comes the loss of purity and potentially the loss in tactile feedback. You will not be able to brake as quickly, rotate as quickly, or have as much steering feel as a 430 with less weight. It's only natural that a new generation should overperform its predecessor. Does the F430 weigh a simlar amount to a 997S with adapative sport seats with power controls, a back seat, and other electronics? This is sort of like the AM Vanquish. Carbon fiber everywhere but still heavy.

Soon Porsche will have to use a lot more aluminum or composite materials to keep the weight down. Especially if they want to refrain from using active suspensions.

Re: Edmunds review of the 430 along with video.

Avg weight of all cars in the U.S. is highly irrelevant. This includes SUVs and trucks and even without those, you don't want your sports car weighing the same as a sports sedan.

The Enzo too could be much lighter, but there are certain aspects Ferrari took into consideration in order to make the car more appealing. Same goes for the CGT. Perhaps because of the hp and race technology, no one is complaining.

    And regular steel chassis
What's the point of an alluminium chassis, if the weight is not reduced?

I imagine the current size and desired structural integrity necessitates an aluminum frame. There are many aluminum cars that aren't exactly light. Gallardo and certain Audis come to mind.
