This was no mistake, this was intentional, the real auction started at 17 Mio but the car found no buyer because it is not considered to be a Porsche.

No, it wasn’t intentional: this is what you get when the man with the hammer is the only guy in the room with an English accent...
He says ‘17 million’ but the guy/girl behind the keyboard understood ‘70 million’. This will sting for a while, I suppose...

A top classic/heritage car.
A part of history involving Adolf Hitler, Ferdinand Porsche, the original VW of the Nazi DAF and the beginning of that iconic shape.
There were bids for USD 13 million and 17 million before the cock-up. Next time it will fetch much more than the expected 20 million.

Why would it be intentional? To serve what purpose?
1969 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3 / 2008 Porsche 911 GT3 RS (sold) / 2011 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Performance / 2014 BMW-Alpina D3 biturbo Touring / 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 Clubsport
Got a few buddies in the room during the auction. They had no problem understanding it was thirTEEN and not thirTY. fourTEEN instead of forTY, and sevenTEEN instead of sevenTY. They were amazed at what the computer guy did with the numbers.
The auctioneer recovered nicely without missing a beat. He did nothing wrong, it's the guy that punch in numbers into the computer that had the fuck up. Probably an American that can't understand proper English.

The first reports indicated that the guy on the mike tried to make a joke, then switched to the real numbers, other reports claimed that the initial bidding start sum was wrong but I wouldn't trust the official explanation since the whole auction was weird, many people left it booing and I'm not surprised the car didn't sell (especially since it isn't the first Porsche).

IMO the Typ 64 has as much history (see above) as the first car with the Porsche name, the 356 Gmund. So, that Ferdinand 10 years later (1949) put his name which was also the name of his newly formed company on the 64.
The reserve price was USD 20 million and it easily reached 17 million before the blunder that resulted in the disruption. I cannot see how the Typ 64 flopped as a piece of automotive history.
This car is a fascinating design an ancestor of the Porsche shapes that followed and in 1939 it must have looked like science fiction

Sale prices at a few auctions lately have not reached the asked / estimated prices for collection cars . There was a big auction by Sothesby in Australia a few month back and hardly any car reached the estimate .
We have probably seen the top of the curb for a while and prices are dropping
