    Some AMG transmission info.

Some more snippets of information. In autocar mag today I read that AMG is looking at DSG gearboxes now. This technology is still 4-5 years away in an AMG but they say its the future. Something about widening the floor pan and its heavier than the 5 speed auto. They say they are working on an uprated 5 speed to cope with up to 922lbft of torque for the 65 models, but this won't come before 2006, maybe 2007 for US. The 7 G Tronic is being uprated for the 6.3 V8 which will have "at least" 500"BHP". They said the current auto gearbox is restricting AMG engine development, AMG wants to make more higher revving motors, and turbocharging will feature in many new AMG models. The current 5 speed auto can only allow revs to 7000rpm, but they said this restricted the engine development of the SLR/CLK-DTM, they want to make it rev higher. Something to do with the torque converter being limited to a max of 7Krpm. Thats all I think. It was Peter Robinson commenting.

So generally we can expect high revving motors from AMG in the future coupled to DSG Gearboxes, is AMG becoming BMW M?

    Re: Some AMG transmission info.

I don't understand the sudden move from Kompressor- to normally aspirated engines.

Didn't the new head of BMW's M GmbH come from AMG because they didn't follow his philosophy of high-performance engines?

I am pretty curious if Mercedes will show up with a DSG system. It would be quite surprising to me - most disadvantages of automatic gearboxes could be eliminated by now, for example with the use of the lock-up torque converter. So why does AMG invest in such a complex technology?? This system clearly makes more sense for Porsche, in my eyes!

    Re: Some AMG transmission info.

Ferdie, AMG stated a long time ago that they would move away from supercharging. The principle concern is excessive fuel consumption. The torque also requires excessive strengtheing and heavy components. The parent company, Mercedes, also stated they plan to use turbocharged units instead of Kompressors, hence the top of the range A-class has a 2.0L Turbocharged engine, and not the 1.8 Kompressor that Mercedes currently use.

I do not know why Ulrich Bruhnke went to BMW, perhaps personal reasons, but its too early to say AMG has exactly been missing him. AMG's head engineer Tobias said if everyone has it, we must have it as well, the technology is still 4-5 years of development work away but when it does arrive, you can have F1 shifting when you want to drive your SL55 like Montoya or regular Mercedes auto when you just want to cruise, the best option for AMG in the future IMO.

    Re: Some AMG transmission info.

I heard that Bruhnke left AMG because of differing views how to continue in the future in terms of engine philosophy. I might mix up something of course...

I'd say turbocharged engines have an even worse gas consumption under heavy load than supercharged ones, so I cannot understand that!
As I said before, not too long ago turbocharging was an absolute no-go for Mercedes engineers. I don't know why they follow this route by now!

Audi/VW and Porsche work on the DSG system for quite a while already. Since MB used to build their automatics by themselves so far I am not too sure about the source of such a gearbox - they would definately receive a lot of credit (from myself) if they come up with such a system in the next couple of years!

    Re: Some AMG transmission info.

You're absolutely right, if Mercedes build it themselves and call it "DSG-atronic" as they always do, then it would be great. I hear Porsche is working on such a system right now, but wouldn't a Porsche drive like a Ferrari F1 type car then? I prefer Porsche to stay manual.

I always thought the opposite, superchargers suck fuel more than anything, I heard the 65 engine has better mpg than the 55K! One thing I really hate about turbos is that they completely destroy the sound of the engine. Its very good for diesels but for a V8, I would never want to lose the typical AMG "growl". One reason I prefer AMG's 5.5 V8 N/A than its superchraged brother.

I think with the Maybach, and other top of the range engines, Mercedes knew it was one cog down on the competition and forced induction and boat loads of torque was the only way to go. Hence investing a lot of tech into IHI's Supercharger and KKK's turbos. I have witnessed many people saying that the current V12's have absolutely no lag whatsoever. So wahtever works for MB I'm all for it
